Cow's milk is for baby cows!
November 12, 2008 - 02:31 PM

It always amazes me to discover just how many consumers have been brainwashed by dairy industry advertising into thinking that milk from cows is some sort of essential food for humans. In reality, cow's milk is perfect nutrition for baby cows, but nutritionally incompatible with humans, most of whom are actually allergic to the substance.

Humans are the only species that will drink the mammary gland extract of another species. And we didn't even choose a species close to us like monkeys or gorillas. No, we've chosen to drink milk from furry, four-legged creatures mostly because they're the easiest ones to control and dope up with synthetic hormones that turn them into milk-generating machines for profit-motivated dairy operations.

All commercial milk from cows contains pus and blood (Gross!), by the way. The USDA actually sets allowable limits of pus as a federal standard. (Check MilkSucks.com to see how much pus is found in milk in your State!) And that's not to mention the toxic chemicals, PCBs, pesticides, perchlorate and other substances frequently found in milk products. Even if they were somehow free of these chemicals, nearly all commercially-produced milk is pasteurized and homogenized -- a process that turns milk fats into artery-clogging substances that promote heart disease and atherosclerosis.

Yet western populations chug milk by the gallon, and then the people wonder why they suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, obesity, heart disease, sinusitis, acne, constipation and even diabetes. The answer is cow's milk, folks. You'd be better off drinking human milk, but even that's only for babies.

Reading that initial post I was kind of shocked. Never before had I truly thought about humans drinking human milk (because obviously wouldn't it not be safe (in theory). Interesting topic that I'll read more on.

It totally confuses me that humans think they need cows' milk when they're from babies and up into adulthood when baby cows stop drinking their mother's milk when they're not babies anymore...

I can't really recall having someone tell me that I NEED to drink cows milk, I can understand that there are nutrients and things in the milk that I would love to get into me haha but no I don't believe anyone has been forced to drink milk yet.

The majority of humans (70% I think) cannot consume dairy products, this is true. They lack the enzyme to break it down. Why? Evolution/genetics. Populations who historically had no cows lack the enzyme (Native Americans, Asians), while others whose lives revolved around the cow (Europeans) have no problems.

I think whether you should drink it or not comes down to whether your body can tolerate it or not.

It can't be denied that cow's milk is a great source of calcium, and that's an essential mineral.

Dark green vegetables are just as much as a great source of calcium as dairy is. smile

Oh I know that! I wasn't quite saying it's the only source of calcium, I was just pointing out a positive point about milk, that it's not so "nutritionally incompatible".
But well I wouldn't say "just as much", that's not quite true. I know where I come from I'd find it terribly hard to get calcium without milk, short of living off brocolli.

And if you want to get into the bad things food contains - I think that's a whole other kettle of fish!

I had come across this statement by a prominent animal rights activist in my country. If milk in udders isn't drained it causes immense discomfort to the cows and a calf drinking its mother's milk will not be able to completely drain the milk. I'm sure your statement is very specific to your situation. A lot of peoples livelihoods depend on cow milk and the products derived from cow/buffalo milk. Pasteurization is only a heat treatment process that is essential to eliminate microorganisms that may cause harm. Dictating specific diets to people like saying you can get calcium through green vegs is not at all a realistic solution. Milk is the most easily available form of calcium when grren vegs are unaffordable. Goin by your statement, should we then also stop consuming honey ?

I saw the website www.milksucks.com . I am of the opinion that their "findings" are very misleading. Anyway, the issue is not with milk consumption, but with the way cows are treated. If you just milk cows the old fashioned way, there's no blood or pus. I've seen it. And to stop injecting cows with hormones, and let them graze naturally. And all the dung, its great fuel(heard of biogas?) by the way. The toxic chemicals you mention are found in many many sources, not just milk. Obesity, heart disease are lifestyle disorders, and they're not prevalent because Americans drink milk. Sinusitis and milk .. How does milk block the sinuses!

this statement has one more angle of view.... cow's milk is for baby cows...so is mother's milk...and all children must be exclusively BREAST FED for a minimum of 6 months.....this is must so as to bring down the neonatal mortality rates in developing countries...

“Humans are the only creatures that drink milk from the mother of another species. It’s as unnatural for a child to drink the milk of a cow as it is for a dog to nurse from a giraffe! Human children have no nutritional requirements for cow’s milk and grow up healthy and strong without it. Cow’s milk and the products made from it are laced with foreign, frequently allergy-inciting bovine protein and often contain hydrocarbon pesticides and other chemical contaminants, as well as health-endangering saturated fat. Clinical experience suggests that cow’s milk is linked to numerous common health problems (runny noses, allergies, ear infections, recurrent bronchitis, asthma, etc.) that often keep people returning to their doctors’ offices instead of to their jobs or classrooms. Parents should feel good about giving their children the many nutritious, tasty alternatives to dairy products instead.”

This is indeed an interesting topic.

Cow's milk has been around for decades. The reason why it has been around for so long is its availability, nutritional value and affordability. I can understand how people feel that milk from another species may be unhealthy but is it really?

LINK >> Comparison of Milk Components

Adult consumption of milk or milk by-products from other mammals is generally safe provided there are no allergies. A lot of people tend to be lactose-intolerant and thus are unable to consume dairy products.

It's fair enough to say that all sorts of nasty things would be found in cow's milk (such as chemicals used for agriculture). However, we live in a world where processed foods contain all sorts of nasty things. Yet we place faith in the authorities that they would provide the safest products possible.

If you're really against it, you may as well make an effort to eat organic.

I would say that feeding another specie's milk to a human infant would pose a greater health risk. Simply because of the varying concentrations of nutrients/minerals/vitamins. Furthermore, a human infant's body may not be able to easily digest the components of another mammal's milk compared to human breast milk.

Just to add: all milk from mammals is derived from blood, I believe. So I don't see what's so "yuck" with that.
