Fake youth conference taking place in Alabama / UK

Someone posted this fake event as a blog post on TIG, if you receive any e-mails or TIG Messages about this event please be sure to alert TIG staff by posting any information in this Discussion Thread.

Here is part of the message:


"FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CHIEF ORGANIZER Prof. Allen Edwards

APPLY FOR PARTICIPATION:

You are hereby notified that the Inter-circle organization ICO invites you to attend her youth conference holding in January 2009 in USA/UK. These ground-breaking meeting of the international youth movements and other related NGO's, where as many as 200 participants will convene to learn new ways to empower themselves and how to adhere to social norms shall be a fruitful one. These events shall offer our members and others the opportunity to learn, teach, inspire and being inspired. And also to explore the potential of a performance approach to unleash and nurture the human capacity to create, collaborate and change the world."

Hi Laura,

This one and others like it are always potential sources of misinformation just to spam people. It is unfortunate that all with good intentions on TIG and elewhere on the Internet have also to be vigilant and watch out for scams like this and others.

A good resource to check anything is www.snopes.com

Often times such scams will already be listed there.

Avoiding spreading viruses also occurs when Snopes is first checked and then the offending email communication is just deleted rather than shared.

Another good practice is to only use "BCC" or blind cc when emailing so that the practice of anyone tempted to spam those listed in "CC" can be avoided.
