The need to strengthen the campaign for the advancement of youth by creating more effective partnerships at national, regional and global levels, encourage governments to set up the necessary machinery, actions plans and policies to address the problems of youth developments is the primary objective of the Global Action Youth-led Rural Development Network (GAYRDN)

With about 170 million young people across the globe still illiterates, Africa having the highest rate of urban and rural youth illiteracy rate in the world, made up of 20 percent male and 50 percent female illiteracy rates, thus, youth development, empowerment and environmental sustainability is a major concern as it affects our generation and next.

Nigeria has about 80 million youths, making 60 percent of the population, currently put at 140 million. In Africa where most young people work as sweat shot workers, self employed artisans, service technicians, street vendors, sales persons, casual wage labourers, refuse collectors, prostitutes, beggars, roadside sellers or hawkers, the need for youth active participation on decision and strategic planning is the focus point of the Global Action Youth-led Rural Development Network (GAYRDN).

GAYRDN is a parliamentary session of the African Youth Empowerment Scheme Conference, it is designed to bring together all key players in various youth communities, ranging from international organization to local community base organization, individuals, to interact and brainstorm on topical issues affecting youth development especially in the rural areas.

The GAYDAN parliamentary session will involve over 200 youths from different local communities and state in Nigeria with a maximum of six representatives each.

The GAYDAN state representatives will discuss, and present paper work on ways of achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG), with much emphasis on eradicating poverty and extreme hunger, environmental sustainability, universal basic education, developing partners for development and combating HIV/AIDS and other diseases.

The Global Action Youth-led Rural Development Network with the theme “Youth for Development” seeks to make governments of member states more responsive to the needs and aspirations of young people for a better future. The session will harmonize, strengthen national capacities regarding youth and to increase the quality and quantity of opportunity available to young people for their participation in society.

The conference date 19th -20th December 2008 at owerri, Imo State.
