[Poll] Youth Employment - Internships
November 5, 2008 - 08:12 PM

I am a final year student, i graduate in less than 4 weeks and for someone who is interested in international development and working with organizations such as the UN, it is an exciting prospect. However in recent times i have come across a very worrying partner that potentially debars Young people from following their dreams. The UN for instance prides itself as an equal opportunity employer and further states that it is more happy to received applications for employment from persons in developing Countries or from such a background. Yet what opportunities exist for young people who are in the middle of a degree program or have just finished and want to take up some sort of internship. On several websites i have read that these organisations do no pay interns during their time of work albeit these interns do massive amounts of work. I can't help but think about internships as a sort of "hidden slavery". the promote this positions as being beneficial to the individual but how do they expect a young university student in Mali to raise the funds to take him to Geneva to work as an intern without pay. The times when such things happened have come and gone. I believe its time for positive Labour ethics to really come into play in these organizations,
"render unto peter what is his due"
there are so many people who want to contribute to changing their worlds who cannot because of these barriers that the organizations we admire the most, have set up.

Hi,

I am totally with you. I was selected for a WHO internship on 'Stop TB Partnership'. The internship was about 6 weeks duration at the WHO headquarters at Geneva. As you are aware, WHO will not provide any stipend (even for those from developing countries or such background) for the interns.

I had to quit the decision as I was not in a position to fund myself. I required some 3,00,000 INR (Apprx. 6358 US$) and could not imagine for such a huge sum...

As you rightly said, such things really obstruct many youngsters from contributing much.

This is what I mean:

The internships are voluntary; however interns are paid a stipend to cover daily travel expenses and lunch. People interested in volunteering with [REOMVED] must be able to support themselves financially both in terms of getting to [REMOVED] as well as most living expenses in country. Whilst [REMOVED] can provide limited support, potential interns must also organise their own logistics such as visas, travel, accommodation etc.

At least this organization offers a small stipend there are others that don't even do that.
How is this fair?

It's true that we can not expect everything from the organization. The basic stipend/support will be suffice. But, the options for potential funding from external agents/sources should be given. This is possible by the tie-ups / MOUs between organizations to promote such people centric internship.

I am not blaming anyone; but insist to utilize the man power very effectively as we have witnessed a strong shortage of health workforce in many parts of the world...
