I recommend reading these two books to better understand:
1) No-nonsense guide to World Poverty
2) No-nonsense guide to International Development
You'd be surprised what you think is good, is actually damaging.

On Global Poverty
I find Poverty to be such a relative concept.
Though we can likely all agree that many countries are considered poor when comparing their economies and GDP per capita with G8 style societies.
Somehow, you will find people in all of these countries who consider themselves or at least, some of their fellow citizens, as poor.
However, poverty being such a relative form of measure, perhaps we ought to split it in half and refer to its most urgent form in terms more specific: Why not "Poverness"?
Surely, this would at the least allow for modern talks to renew the understanding of Poverty, for mankind has a rather awful tendency to rank suffering not by the degree of harm done but by the proximity of its occurrence.

I would define poverty not in terms of the amount you would earn per month, but about the access(lack of it) to basic needs. Healthcare is so important, and when that is out of reach (unaffioradable), that could be poverty. No access to nutritious food could be poverty, no access to education etc. Here I've seen that in big cities, for many 'poor' people, whatever they earn is never enough. But the same amount in small villages is a big sum. At least here, I'm talking about India, we should make sure that we provide opportunities so that people can stop migrating from small villages to cities to earna living. And provide free or nominally charged excellent healthcare, and free education. People still might not have enouhg money, but if they can eat healthy food, and have a home, and have access to education for their kids, half the battle is won.
