What The!!!!
December 17, 2001 - 06:50 AM

Today in Sydney, Where Australias only Nuclear Reactor is located. Something strange happened.

Nearly a hundred greenpeace members, divided into 3 teams. Raided the compound holding the reactor. A large number stormed the front 'gate' and made it through the 4 dumbfounded security guards, who didnt know what hit them when peopl dressed up as nuclear waste barrels came running.

Now, not only did a large number make it through - but the scary thing is - while the guards were busy being occupied by running barrells, a second team SCALED the fence and CLIMBED onto the reactor building.

A third team made it INSIDE the building.

This is incredible.

Can you imagine what would happen if terrorists were able to do the same! a small team of them would have no problem if the guards couldnt even see a convoy coming.

Scary.

the kids going crazy.
December 17, 2001 - 08:37 AM

Theres no evidence to suggest kids go wacko (and adults for that matter) after being exposed to radiation.

However, its common knowledge that kids become frustrated when they dont understand why everyone around them is acting the way they are. The same goes for Adults.

Not sure about that woman breaking her arm after knocking back some guys advances, i always figured that happens in everday life. Unfortunately.

Greenpeace was always a little too militant for my liking, they have nice causes to work for, but often they skip a lot of the important facts, and they often fail to consider the other side of the problem (the business people - usually) and where they are coming from.

They often fail to seek compromise.

Without compromise I fail to see how they are going to get anything else done.

Dont have anything to add.

Karis - this made the 6pm news. Wasnt the top story though. some woman who left her dog in a car was. Sad really. The quality of the news services in my city is really pathetic.

HIFAR Dangerous?
December 17, 2001 - 09:21 AM

It sounds like there is some confusion as to research reactors like HIFAR, and large power reactors. HIFAR is a small research reactor (around 10 MW). Power reactors are in the range of thousands of MW. HIFAR operates at low temperature and pressure. Power reactors operate at much higher temperatures and pressures (though NOT as high as coal plants). This means that even if someone could get in and "meltdown" HIFAR (not very easy since it has such large safety margins in performance) there is not much radioactivity to significantly impact Sidney. Remember, you have to have the "right weather" (wind patterns and inversion layers to keep the radioactivity concentrated) or you won't see anything.

Another thing about coal. When it is burned, it releases naturally occurring radioisotopes like radium. In fact, one's radiation dose from a coal plant is MUCH greater than a nuclear plant of the same power rating. Somehow, radiation from coal is "good" and radiation from nuclear is "bad." ;-)

I know that nuclear technology is highly controversial. I only ask that the same yardstick be applied to similar technologies.

Safe Nuclear Power????
December 17, 2001 - 12:03 PM

Interesting insights Pred.
--------------------------
I must say it's even more interesting when you examine the infancy of nuclear power and research into the technology. Deep River and Chalk River just outside of Ottawa were the sites for these activities.
Excluding Terrorist activities nuclear power is volatile. In 1952 and 1958 there were major accidents at these sites ... one of which led a to a cloud of radioactive material going up in the air. Comforting huh?

Personal Insights
-----------------
I had a gal friend who lived in the town of Pickering, not far from the nuclear power station. She had one kid push her down the stairs which nearly killed her. Then I ran into her years later and found out that when she wouldn't accept some guys advances he broke her arm. And of course there is more I can go into but I could probably fill a book. In short my theory is low level radioactivity can cause heightened aggression.

The Real Issues
----------------
The real point is that nuclear power was too expensive once government funding dried up and too dangerous because of its volatility and health risks due to exposure to radioactive material. Remember it doesn't take much.
I wish Greenpeace would devote their efforts to thinking how Nuclear power could be cost effectively developed, safely deployed, and protected from possible terrorist incursion instead of medieval tactics like storming the gates. Going postal doesn't help anyone.

its spelt Sydney.
December 18, 2001 - 03:09 AM

rsmarg - its spelt "Sydney!" big grin

Actually, im only going by what the report said. Not by my own calculations, if i had known its true power of only a few tens of MW I probably would have wrote what you did to accompany the news story.

However, thats what i heard on TV. Maybe they should hire another expert (and no - they didnt quote his name or what his real occupation was, so he was probably some cracked up mathematician) to tell us the REAL facts.

So about duping you all like that. But i was only going by what was said.

Fortunately for my finances, my knowledge of MW is greater than that of my australian spelling. ;-)
