Sustainable Tourism

According to the World Tourism Organization, 698 million people traveled to a foreign country in 2000, spending more US$ 478 billion. International tourism receipts combined with passenger transport currently total more than US$ 575 billion - making tourism the world's number one export earner, ahead of automotive products, chemicals, petroleum and food. (source: http://www.uneptie.org/pc/tourism/sust-tourism/economic.htm)
Given the size of the industry, there should be little wonder that many people are concerned about its sustainability impact on countries and that it takes so long to change practice in the industry.
There are several great groups working on it though:
* United Nations Environment Programme (http://www.uneptie.org/pc/tourism/sust-tourism/)
* National Geographic (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/sustainable/)
There are great groups working regionally as well, like:
* Network for the Sustainable Development of Tourism Destinations in Europe (http://www.tourism-site.org/)
* Island Sustainable Tourism (http://www.insula.org/tourism/)
* Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (http://www.cha-cast.net/)
If you love travel and care about its impact, check out these sites for tips for travel operators, tourists, and government planners.

Hey Terry!
I was wondering if you know of any studies of the impact tourism has had on any particular place?
