Can poverty and conservation co-exist?

When all you can think about is getting your next meal and living to see another day, is it possible for you to see how you actions impact the environment?
People in my country know they should recycle plastic bags, but most couldn't care less because plastic bags are the cheapest in the market. Governments in developing countries don't focus on environmental conservation because majority of the population lives below the poverty line, and they feel the government should focus on economic growth which is more important in their eyes.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to spread the ides of conservation to the most impoverished in the society?

Good Question!
I also think it´s a big problem that people from developing countries ( most of them) can not care about enviromental problems because they have to think about how they get there next meal or can support their familiy. So sure the first point to tackle environment problems mainly in such countries is to support this people of course, how its discussing in a other thread, at best by "teachthe people how to fish and not give them fish". If you support this people you can ask to save the environment. So it is possible that you can tackle two problems in one way. Certainly it can`t be like this that people only get help if they care about theire enironment, this isn´t ethical. To summarise this: it is very hard to save on the one hand the environemt and on the other tackle poverty.

Off course, conservation can be a move to address poverty issue but policy makers should be wider. We have a misconception that conservation is just conservation and undermining socio-economic aspects. Therefore, involving people in conservation may help to reduce poverty through conservation in the developing countries.

What is poverty? Who are the poor? What is conservation? What should we conserve? When should we conserve resources?
poverty differs from one country to the other. We can not generalize to cover the whole subject at once..The best way is to have case studies. The people of Congo have the best mineral and biodiversity resources in the world, yet are poor. Why? The management of those resources by the elite, powerful.Congolose die of hunger, starvation and unimaginable poverty in the richest country on earth. Why?Governments sell natural resources to Multinational companies to extract and pilfer the resources and profits abroad. The local people can not conserve the resources in the most biting poverty. In Uganda, the herdsmen have encroached on game reserve, because they cant find suitabe grass for thier animals.
One of the problem is many governments still have colonial legislation which gazetted all these huge chunks of land and left the natives landless.
The new paradigm of sustainable development puts the inhabitants of those resources as participants and owners of that resource like the Masai and the Lions for improving eco-tourism.
When people benefit from conservation, then poverty is addressed

No, People That Live In Poverty Might Have Given All Their Money Away For The Love Of Mother Earth But Probably Not, So I Don't Think That That People Can Be Conservationist And Be In Poverty. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MACCA MAN
