Well that is part of the problem - we abandoned all of our cultural beliefs and sense of identity believing that the way of the west was the best. We should have kept some of our customs like togetherness and unity while leaving those practices that were leaving us behind. So i cannot say i agree with the view that leaving our "timidity and backwardness" is the best way 4 us to get ahead.

Africa and development ....uh.. I love africa and belive so much in africa because in the real sense of it, the raw material that the world uses majority spring from here, but when we talk about development and our leadership mentality and responsiblity here, i see a different thing and see that 50yrs as if it will never be possible. I am a postive person but sometimes i love to look at reality... most of our youth are not loyal and are not ready to take the position needed for the kind of develoment we need, poverty and hunger has blinded most of us, that we see neccessity as luxury... there is so much of corruption and poverty that is a major problem for development

i agree with you tamsgogo. it's question of putting your hearts and your minds to it. If the presidents really want to make a change in Africa then they have to put their minds and hearts to it. nice quote.

No, Africa won't be industrialized in the next 50yrs...most of the African countries have had their independence for over 50yrs but most of them have done nothing over all those years...what will make them any different now...especially with the so-called leaders that are being elected!!! Unless the electorate changes their voting patterns and start basing their reasons for voting on merit then I don't think we are going anywhere with this continent!!!

YES WE CAN
I bet a lot of people have said that over the years but non of them have meant it or rather shown it with the outstanding exeption of His Excellency Barrack Obama.
So if he could do it, if the humble son of africa could endure all the struggles - and they were and still are quite alot- then who are we to say that we cannot?
Change start with us. So lets start by thinking positive and putting our best foot forward, even at our own expense.

If we want to see true development in Africa, we need to tackle the issues one by one.
One of the greatest mistakes a lot of people make today is ignoring the fact that the African Continent is very large and as such the socio-political dynamic is varied in different regions. To truly begin a move towards full development in 50 or so years we need to identify the issues relative to these regions for example:
what are the problems we face in the western African bloc?
what are the most problematic blocs in Africa?
What model of development should be applied to the different blocs?
In other words a divide and conquer approach is inevitable.
I am glad that there are moves towards an African Union, but honestly do we really need this right now. As an economist I'd say no simply because the rate of development of the states in Africa is too disparate. Many of our leaders seem to forget that the success of the EU was achieved over the period of 50 years and the EU originally started with 6 countries: Luxembourg, Belgium, Italy, France, w.Germany, and the Netherlands. even then there were still problems. These problems have taken years to be ironed out.
Now Africa is thinking of forming a union with over 45 countries, most of which still have severe internal economic crisis. Nigeria which is currently a power house in African Economics is just now trying to sort itself out in terms of democracy and all; the issues faced in Nigeria itself will take nothing less than 10 - 15 years to address. Then there is South Africa still trying to unite its population, many people don't understand that although there have been significant moves towards a full integration in the country there are still fundamental issue that remain untouched, issues that may very well determine the progress of development.
Africa needs to realize that what we need is not just development but rather Sustainable development and to get this we must commit a lot of time and efforts.

The unity of Africa back to Pan-Africanims ideology, this unity had been tired of in a time that African less progress and undeveloped. I think this idea can not work now, because the political interest of elite groups has rocked on the peak, there is no way that can be generated unity of Africa, some countries struggle to separate one another, for example, great Somalia split up into three zones, Somaliland which is us, South of Somalia that you know what is going on and Puntland. The dream of great Somalia came out from my people reside north west of ex-Somalia government, after we get failed that dream and met set back still affected our development, we decided after launched along struggle against regime of Si’ad Bare who hold and ruled Somalia for a coup in 1969 to 1991, to be self-declared of Somaliland.
Nevertheless, we need to think another strategy of unity and develop Africa

I can agreeing with you abit based on the gap already existing between English speaking countries and French speaking contries in Africa...they hardly do things combinely nor work toegether for the purpose of one contient...i have personally witness this, whether is due to the french system of addimintration is different from that of english one or because of language barrier existing between the two groups

One thing for sure is that Africa may not develop if we keep holdon with those old character assinaition among tribes, I mean uncivilized attitudes and segregation.
Personally, I believe God has pure purpose of allowing many tribes in Africa, as such, each has a greater rule to play in our developing if we can unit and forget our differences...I'm confident we have everything we need and.we have many handiworks
Again Individualize has been a major problem because sustanable development can't be achieve on such bais. Africans do not get each into joint business due to lack of trust and hetrad among one another
Can we get out of these attitude and embrace development??

To obtain united State of Africa (USA), it can be impossible for couple of reasons, let me pick up one by one. First of, there is no universal traditional African language from educator to illiteracy that speak across the continent, different believes, customs, language, behaviors are available. These things are limited that genus of unity

El that is not entirely true. Again let me draw your attention to the model of integration applied by the EU. The EU comprises 27 countries each of which has its own culture and languages. this however has not stopped the move to integration. The problem with Africa is not the Language, if that was the problem it would be easily solved. The problem is that there are persons both Legal and Natural, that benefit from its current state ho would be adversely affected by an African Integration. These persons have a great influence in politics and until they see a greater good in Africa Integrating, they will continually work against the system.
On the other hand when i think about it, integration in the African region seems so hard to fathom. in Theory it seems like a fantastic idea but practically nothing can be so far from the truth. Let me get you thinking a little bit.
Zimbabwe as at this time last year had an inflation rate of over 5000%, this inflation rate has increased exponentially since then and might have already crossed the 10000% mark. We don't know because the Zimbabwean govt has stopped releasing accurate data. If you are talking intergration you have to consider that in a common market system like what is being proposed the countries will have to share the burden of the least developed state - This means that all the other economically stable states like botswana and South Africa will have to consider radical economic modifications to cope with the dynamic brought on by a highly inflated economy. The there will be the issue of free movement of persons - There is definately going to be a great problem with some countries suffering a high percentage of immigrants. Why is this the case? look at how many countries are currently experiencing some sort of war or crisis from the DRC to Sudan and so on.

Then of course we have the age old problem of those who don't consider themselves as Africans and we are talking a portion of the Somalian people, Sudanese, Egypt and the list goes on. How do you integrate with someone who doesn't consider themselves as being a part of your region. - On a side note, earlier on during the expansive stages of the EU Morocco had applied for membership of the Eu and here is an interesting fact, they were not denied, their application was 'set aside' in the interim. makes you think doesn't it.
