Many of you probably know about this already, but every US President who has been elected in a year divisible by 20, since 1840, has either died in office, or has survived an assassination attempt.
1840-William Henry Harrison (Died in Office Apr. 4, 1841)
1860-Abraham Lincoln (Assassinated Apr. 15, 1865)
1880-James A. Garfield (Assassinated Sept. 19, 1881)
1900-William McKinley (Assassinated Sept. 14, 1901)
1920-Warren G. Harding (Died in Office Aug. 2, 1923)
1940-Franklin D. Roosevelt (Died in Office Apr. 12, 1945)
1960-John F. Kennedy (Assassinated Nov. 22, 1963)
1980-Ronald Reagan (Survived Assassination Attempt Mar. 30, 1981)
Hmm, what does this mean for our old pal George Bush (elected in 2000)?

The same folks who bring you things like this:
Lincoln - Kennedy coincidences
(Andrew Johnson was Linconln's vice president, who then became president and Lyndon Johnson was Kennedy's vice president, who then became president.)
1) Lincoln was elected in 1860, Kennedy in 1960, 100 years apart
2) Both men were deeply involved in civil rights for African Americans.
3) Both men were assassinated on a Friday, in the presence of their wives.
4) Each wife had lost a child while living at the White House.
5) Both men were killed by a bullet that entered the head from behind.
6) Lincoln was killed in Ford's Theater. Kennedy met his death while riding in a Lincoln convertible made by the Ford Motor Company.
7) Both men were succeeded by vice-presidents named Johnson who were southern Democrats and former senators.
8) Andrew Johnson was born in 1808. Lyndon Johnson was born in 1908, exactly one hundred years later.
9) The first name of Lincoln's private secretary was John, the last name of Kennedy's private secretary was Lincoln.
10) John Wilkes Booth was born in 1839 [according to some sources] Lee Harvey Oswald was born in 1939, one hundred years later.
11) Both assassins were Southerners who held extremist views.
12) Both assassins were murdered before they could be brought to trial.
13) Booth shot Lincoln in a theater and fled to a warehouse. Oswald shot Kennedy from a warehouse and fled to a theater.
14) LlNCOLN and KENNEDY each have 7 letters.
15) ANDREW JOHNSON and LYNDON JOHNSON each have 13 letters.
16) JOHN WlLKES BOOTH and LEE HARVEY OSWALD each have 15 letters.
17) A Licoln staffer Miss Kennedy told him not to go to the Theater. A Kennedy staffer Miss Lincoln, told him not to go to Dallas.

And as for the assassination/dying in office, as much as I'd like to Bush go, he would be succeeded by Cheney, who I think I dislike even more. Besides, what with all the press coverage Dubya gives to his trips home and hard manual labor back at the ranch, he'd catch a bullet and throw it back at his assailant, just like Super Man. And would not succumb to any mere disease.

He was elected in 1848 and died in office in 1850. Gerald Ford survived assasination attempts as well. What this probably shows is that being the US President is a stressful and sometimes risky job. However, it is the branch of US government that sets much of the political agenda, so many are willing to take the risk.
