Madagascar : Ariary replaces Malagasy Franc

Madagascar is facing a rapid evolution since the new president Marc Ravalomanana was elected. This is quite surprising when we think of what happened next year when the pacific revolution of malagasy people was interpreted as a coup in the eyes of the international community, especially from media. But now, everybody seems to agree with Ravalomanana.
But as usual, some of you possibly don’t understand what I’m talking about as Madagascar is one of several unknown countries in the world. Usually, people stare at me, as if I’m speaking “latin” when I say, proudly, that I’m from Madagascar. But I can understand that, Malagasy people are very discreet.
Before colonization, Ariary was used in Madagascar, this currency is still in use, especially by the rural population. Madagascar was colonized by France and gained full independence in 1960. Thus, Malagasy people inherit some French administrative ways of governement. Since then, Malagasy Franc was used as well as Ariary. As the country is officially bilingual, Malagasy and French, Malagasy Franc is the French version of the monetary unit (used internationally) and Ariary was the Malagasy version one. Now, the new president has decided to use only Ariary and to dissolve the Malagasy Franc. The main reason is to end the circulation of falsified Malagasy franc banknote.
For those who don’t know Madagascar, short background:
Madagascar is the fourth biggest island in the world after Australia, Groenland and Borneo, Madagascar is known as the intersection of Africa and Asia. It is a mix of different culture which diversity is not only seen on its people but also on its flora and fauna. To help you situate Madagascar on the map. Take a look at the south-east region of Africa which comprises South Africa, Tanzania, the Comoro Island, Mozambique, Zimbabwe……and move to the east, you will find a big island, like a left footstep, a little bigger that France….well, welcome to Madagascar!
