TRAVELING ,between tourism ans searching for better opportunities
August 1, 2003 - 08:12 AM

We all dream to travel to fly and to visit other countries .
we all have the same dream , but it differs from the motive for this dream, do we really want to leave our countries to knoe more about other countries, othe cultures and other civilizations? ,or we just have the desire to leave searching for better opportunity

Interesting distinction.... I hate being a tourist, but I love travelling. For me, the difference is that when I travel, it tends to be to meet people - either old friends in new places, or to attend conferences/workshops to meet new people (as well as reconnect with old friends). Travelling has a greater connection to relationships in my mind. Which then leads to being introduced to a new country/culture in a more meaningful and respectful way.

Tourism has too many awful connotations in my mind of disconnection - getting to know a country through the fake shows/celebrations put on for outsiders.

A Dilemma
August 1, 2003 - 03:54 AM

Well, Esalm it is an interesting discussion. It coincides of my thoughts nowadays. Travelling has been always an exciting dream, something that arises a lot of question in your mind about an Unknown Country to you, a country you dream of visiting and hence you mind goes through endless questions. It is really an interesting to back your bags, heading to the airport, getting into the plane, read One Planet for the country to which you are heading, and dream of "How The Country Looks, What will be the first thing I will see, How much I will see and tell my family and friends about". I find it really interesting when you think about travelling: You are from a different culture and language in the middle of a totally different culture and langauge, who will affect whom? Let's suppose you will stay a year in a country far away from home country, all by your own, totally different culture from yours. Whom you will be when you come back? Will you be able to stand everything on your own? Will you change to the better or to the worse? Will you be able to return back to your home country and be Yourself again?
Definitely, you will learn something new, you will gain some new skills, you will have more expereince, you will be more self-independent, you will be more knowledgeable. But is it not hard to drop all your life to which you have accustomed to, in my case for 21 years, and all your family , friends, your special memory places and moments, what you are used to do, and go on with a new experience?
Well, I do not know, I am in a dilemma.

I believe every youth should get the opportunity to travel and see other countries and i don't mean as a "spoiled" vacation with his parents but in form of a camp or a scholarship. This way he/she will get the chance to get to know new people which is as much as important as seeing the sights and eating the food of the country..
Living as an independent person makes u realize who u actually am, what u need to do with ur live and how u want to spend it!

Well,
I agree with you shimaa everyone should take the chance to travel abroad and see how other countries look like,See other peoples and gain more and more experience and I think that traveling to other countries makes people of different parts of the world more close and lessen the gap in points of view between different peoples.

I hate to travel alot , but sometimes i'm forced to do so , like the last 4 or 5 years i traveled every week to cairo cz my college is there and i lived there also , and sometimes i had to stay there for months just to attend my lessons , but that was sure very hard to live all alone and try to feed urself and do everything u want by urself , i think i knew now quite sure what's the mean of the warm of the family and the mean of mam in house .

Travel vs. Tourism. Great discussion topic and what a great theme to have since the summer months (in the northern hemisphere) tends to be centred around travel!

To answer your first question, travel is not just about leaving your own country to see the opportunity in others, it is more about appreciating what your own country has.

When I travelled to the Far East, I was amazed to fill all my senses with the Asian culture. Not only that but the land, geography and nature was astounding. Upon arriving back to Canada, I truly did appreciate the opportunities that we have as Canadians, the acceptance of every person and the beauty of Canada's own land.

Hi guys i think Amr Ammar is right that we have to travel and to knw new people, to knw new cultures , but i think that we need b4 traveling to knw new forign cultures i think that we must have our own local culture ,so we won't be affected wz forign ruined ones like whats happning these days. young people travel to the states as egyptians and come back as cow-boys isn't that funny ?!!!!!!!!!!
anyway i think we need to be ready to travel b4 we travel .

well, i think travelling isn't only about travelling by the body, a clever traveller should do it by the mind as well, and i think this is the more important. what's the use in getting to know other cultures and different people without surfing with the mind in the soul of these cultures and people? it's nothing. man can travel not only through countries, but also through thoughts, cultures, lifestyles and ways of thinking. this teaches a person that his thoughts and culture aren't the most important, aren't the best, aren't the ultimate or the optimum. it teaches a person to be tolerant, understanding, of a wider point of view, and forgiving. it teaches a person to be human, and that's the real soul of travelling; being a better human being

i think u didn't get my point, i was talking about the fact that travelling isn't a goal. i was trying to emphasize the goal of travelling from my point of view, and i wasn't just demonstrating the different phases of travelling.
