choices: do you always have a choice
September 5, 2008 - 12:49 PM

Is there always more than one option in a situation or are there times when you really don't have a choice, times when circumstances leave you with no choice and force you into taking only a particular action with no space for other possibilities?

hi,
Hmmm, i think that the question u ask is a very interesting one.
in my opinion you sometimes don't really have a choice, although at all times you may think that you indeed have.
u can easily choose to say 'yes' or 'no', but for certain things even if you wat to say 'no' u just say 'yes'.
but should we not at all times have the choice to choose the things that (to us) are good eventhough others may get mad or angry?

I believe we always have a choice at least. It is cause we are still alive tomorrow. We chose.
If I need more choices, I will prepare to have more.

What distinguishes man from other animals is the ability to choice.

When God created man he gave him that ability.

In every situation we have the ability to chose our reaction to the situation.nomatter the situation. If it seems there is no other choice we still have a choice to do it or not.

when you choose choose wisely......

Hey...I agree with you that one may not always have a choice and that we should always choose what's good for us regardless of what other people think.lets all choose what empowers us and what improves the quality of our lives.thanks for your insights on this question

There's a friend of mine who argues that sometimes you really do not have a choice.

He says that whereas you may appear to be having more than one option it may not be the case.

For instance maybe it would be disastrous to choose option A instead of B such that it appears like the only choice you have is option B.

In such a situation, can you really say you had a choice?

anyway I believe that in any given situation we should choose what is best for us.

I appreciate your contribution to help me understand about making choices.

I agree that God gave us a very powerful gift, the power to choose.Everyday I realize that my choices determine the outcomes of my life and the consequences of my choices.

But picture this scenario, the situation is to go or not to go to school. If you choose not to go,you will not have the certificates which society values so much:and as a result your progress in life may be hindered. But given a choice, you would choose not to go but in this case societal values push you into going to school to be able to survive in the society. In such a case, did you really have a choice?

Thanks for your input in helping me figure out whether we have choices all the time.

Life accords us one privilege and that's of making choices...in every instance whatever direction you sway in a situation...you made that particular choice...doesn't matter whether it was good or bad.

I agree you always have a choice...but in some instances it appears not to be the case...for instance when you have 2 options and one of them is potentially destructive, do you really have a choice. As a sane person you will choose the constructive option.so was there really a choice there?depends on how you look at it , but at the end of it all, I do believe in choices for every situation in our lives, choose wisely and enjoy the benefits.

Ending everything is also a choice. We have a choice to end up our life. Tomorrow this world gets up without your name. Someone will miss you at that time. That is the choice many youth took today. It is not a good choice. But in somehow people will not face with what happened happens. They will take a deep sleep and their mind will not work any more.
So ending everything is the choice you always have..

I believe we always have choices. Even if someone takes away our physical choices, we have control over our reactions/thoughts/outlooks and I believe that sometimes just changing the way we look at something can lead to a whole new set of choices.

I think you've put it really well that even though we may not have a physical choice,we can always choose our perspectives. That truly adds more insight on making choices.

Thank you Wambui. I think the point I made is important because when working with disadvantaged individuals it is not only important to give them material/physical choices, such as job choices or a better living space, but also most importantly to be able to choose to be resilient in the face of their disadvantages. If you show someone how to choose a better job, for example, with out teaching them first how to they can choose to view their circumstances, than if they lose their that new job, they are back where they started. However, if you teach someone to recognize their emotional/mental options, than they become better equipped to deal with adversity.

Absolutely! Shannon, you have brought in a whole new perspective into this discussion, and the way you put it clarified the whole situation of making choices.

Personally, I'm involved with children with special needs and disabilities and I find that the first step is to ensure that they have the right perspective about themselves, life and others; and that makes all the difference for them in terms of enabling them to make empowering choices.

I appreciate your contribution because I'm now convinced that you always have a choice.
