[Poll] Youths Involvement in Political Leadership
August 28, 2008 - 10:39 AM

The happenings leave nothing in my thought but scribble what is below. The youth’s involvement in leadership especially political leadership leaves much to be desired. The old leadership that fought for freedom continues to cling on to power and seems not to be ready to handover power. There is an intergenerational leadership crisis. Youths are suppose to be integrated into power light so they can start to shape their own tomorrows, but we have seen youths not even occupy lower positions in government and in key positions. Chairman Mao once said this world is for us all but especially for the youths. And in this view, we need to shape our own destiny. Today is the result of yesterday, and tomorrow of today. This calls for us to be active if we need to moderate our tomorrows.
However, the mentality of most African leaders, it will be impossible to incorporate and it has been a failure in the past. Some leaders have openly declared they can’t give political power to those who didn’t fight for freedom. Worse off is when they are tired and want to rest, they get their accomplices who have the same mentality, meaning there won’t be loophole for youths. The time their generation will have extinct then shall our services be required to nurse their political clutter. We shall look a crop of failed leaders because we allowed ourselves not to be involved to start shaping policies that will benefit our generation. They are handling natural resources is squeezing our future life. We should be in the fore front for a safer planet campaign. The effects of global warming will heat more on us and our children. Want the right step is what I am pondering on.
Fellow youths, do we feel well represented in leadership positions and especially political? While there are many NGOs promoting putting women in decision-making positions and even instruments like in SADC have been signed to give women about 30% representation in decision making positions but youths have continued to be under represented.
It might not be putting youths at the top, but they can be well fused from below until at the top when the time comes.
Even opposition, though few, still have minimal representation.

Exclusion of the youth is the major challenge we are faced with.

I have seen many young people with a drive to contribute to nation building but are sidelined because of age.Age is used to define maturity and experience. But i believe maturity is not about age but accepting responsibility.

Give us a chance is a video we have produced here to voice our concerns as young people.

thanks forraising this topic its one of the issues on my heart

Hmmm!, It is a big problem not involving the youth in decision making.

I think is partly due to older leaders not allowing us to take part and secondly, most youths are not on top of issues.

I believe we are not only future leaders but we are leaders of today as well. If we are not allowed to learn now, we may end up making the same mistakes our old people are making now.
