Does the university rank really matters?

Everyone would surely want study in one the the top-ranked universities in the world such as Cambridge, Harvard or Oxford. But for me, university rank is given based on the historic achievements of a university. What really matters is our capability. If we have great capabilities, we would surely excel in life no matter in which university we are studying.

I agree. Does someone who went to university have confirmation on that?---
Do you need to go to university to get a job nowadays?

Generally, what you want and what you are doing to get what you want is the most important thing. At the end of the day, we all have a university education although different ranks. However, the rank of the university cannot be ignored in some circles because of "GOODWILL"

I'm not sure what it's like in other countries but in England some of the lower ranked universities like Oxford Brookes and Nottingham are listed as having some of the highest quality teaching in the country.
Personally I don't think rank matters all that much, it's much more about picking the university that offers the course that you want and has an environment that suits you the best.

I think the rank of the university holds more importance when the individual is looking for that first job right after graduation. This is all the more important if the person has little work/internship experience. The rank matters less as the person gains more experience in the world of work. What DOES hold importance over time is the particular degree earned and the area of study.
I went to three universities in my educational career (BA, MS, Ph.D) - and the last one - NYU is what people focus on!

I think if you are planning on doing post graduate work the university doesn't really matter and I also think that if you are planning on working near where you live what university you go to doesn't matter. The only time I can see it being important is if you are applying to work with a Fortune 500 company. A well known university means that ore people know that you have had a quality education instead of having to do the research themselves if they are concerned. Even then though I think what will count more is hard work and personal intelligence.

well, for me it is not very important..i was an average student , i always tried to study well not for marks but for my own knowledge which is wat u need in future while you are working with a firm....rank at the university is only good if one wants to be a well known student at the university..

Honestly, I think it has more to do with status than anything, more often than not. Some types of employers are impressed by big-name schools, and if that's the kind of job you want, then I think it could give you an edge. It's possible as well that a top-ranked school may have access to more big-name professionals in various fields. I personally think though that you get out of college what you put into it, regardless of where you attend--it's better in my opinion to have a solid record at a state school than a lousy one at Harvard.

You make a good point that the effect of university ranking really does depend on the employer, Nikki. I believe that most employers are going to evaluate prospective candidates for ENTRY LEVEL positions based primarily on their work experience/skills, secondarily on school activities and achievements, and probably lastly on the rank of the university.
However, I think that university rank plays a greater role when an employer is comparing between equally experienced candidates for non-entry level positions. They will not look your actual performance (i.e., GPA), but at the school ranking. So, I can see the scenario when they WILL pick the Harvard grad (even with a low GPA - b/c they will not check) over someone from a state school - given that both candidates have similar work experience and skills. Do you not agree?

That is true, Lyndon, all other things being equal (or not, depending on the priorities of the employer) the rank of the school may be a strong influence to an employer's decision. Let me be more precise: I think personal qualities and experience should be the more relevant factor in hiring, though it seems to me that in situations where status is important (say, politics) the name does indeed mean something.
