role of women indevelopment

For a long period of time most African countries have cherished cultures that put women in less advantaged position to engage in development initiatives or activites that can help them to generate incomes. It is often assumed that women are good at household chores and less in business initiatives. I have for the last four years in development work grown to disapprove this belief, women have proved to be more business minded than men, and if empowered that can lead to change in most African Countries, in Uganda where micro finance institutes have prospered with the KRC approach, most of these results have been registered by women. Women also prove to be more corporative than men, via group work women have proved potent and can be a building block for stimulating development in Africa, the have proved accountable and transparent in their operations. Why not try it in your own country to support women groups, and see better results.

I'm glad that I'm in an age where gender equality is truly acceptable.
At least in Canada. What is it like in other parts of the world?
Except I still find myself breaking gender stereotypes, like that women are weaker than men, and not good at math. I agree about that point. Also most of the politicians are white males, and these are the people who run our country. We could use more women in politics, and I have yet to receive a reply from the federal government about why they lack so many women. The media also treats women worse than men for their appearance, in politics as well as with celebrities.
I have heard that women on average earn less than men still. Women are also sexually harassed. But we can discourage behavior from males we do not want to receive that behavior from.
Are these similar problems in development in other countries?

How nice to discuss this issue !!!!
As a woman from Middle East and Arab country, this ignorance for the women role in these countries is very noticed and touchable. The primitive way of thinking about their role in building the society seems not to be changed positively. Most of the people believe that women are just wives and have no role more than taking care of her children. In the recent years there were so many voices and calls to encourage women to take their places and roles in development and the revolution of women rights comes to the top of the agenda in the Arab World. I wish I could be one of the women who will alter the traditional black image about the Arabic women.
Thank u sweeties for opening this discussion and waiting to hear from others about their opinions

I am working as an accounts relationship officer in a microfinance Institution FINCA-UGANDA. FINCA INTERNATIONAL has adopted a village banking methodology worldwide to empower low income women. The fact is majority of our clients are women. For the last 15years we have seen many women develop from scatch into powerful entrepreneurs. They support their families in terms of paying school fees, medical bills e.tc. Women have a role to play in development and it begings with you the reader.
