Marriage to a smoker can raise stroke risk. A new study have revealed that being married to a smoker can raise a person's risk of a stroke.
Previous studies have indicated the dangers of stroke to smokers but till now, had not explored the high risk from passive smoking.
It team at Harvard University, United states, has found that even if one does not smoke, trying the knot with a smoker increases the chance of sufferig a heart stroke by up to 72 percent.
America journal of Preventive medicine as reported. These finding indicate that spousal smoking increases stroke risk among non-smokers and former smokers. The health benefits of quitting smoking likely extend beyond individual smokers to affect their spouses, potentially multiplying the benefits of smoking.
The researchers came to conclusion after analysing the records of more than 16,000 people in US. They looked at people aged over 50 years and their spouses, over a period of nine years. The study found that if the person had never-smoked, living with a smoker raised stroke risk by 42 percent.

Yes, because second hand smoke is much more dangerous than first hand smoke... come to think of it, those smokers have their filters but those who don't have non.. I t would not only be stroke, you still have other respiratory diseases and certain kinds of cancer!

I just want to point out the possible confounds to this study. It doesn't take into an account the second hand smoke an individual encounters outside of the home, or the pollution in the region the study was done, genetic factors of the subjects, etc. Plus, spouses don't necessarily smoke around their spouse. Plus, there's a question of whether the couple are more likely to go to places where second hand smoke is in high volume or to no smoking bars. If so, it would be more so the venues leading to illness, than the spouse itself. I just don't want people panicing because they are involved with a smoker. Personally, I made my husband quit, but it was less to do with my personal health(since he wasn't allowed to smoke around me) but more so to do with genetic risks that could occur due to smoking and be passed down to offspring.

I accept the study but i would not go along with it entirely - i have some friends who smoke and i would date a smoker do yeah. Studies have also found that people living in cities with huge traffic jams are exposed to more fumes and toxins than from a cigarette so hey the study is 50/50.*

This is a really interesting post. I am wondering what the statistics are for children that have a parent that smokes. What are there chances of developing certain life threatening illnessess?
Have any of you grew up in a household with a smoker? And even if you have not, for a child that is old enough to know smoking is bad for them, what are some ways that they can avoid inhaling the second hand smoke in their homes??

yes is true, but....what if before marriage we try to convince the person that we love that is healthier for himself and for ourselves to quite smoking? It's all about love and respect.

i dont know many things about being married to a smoker, however i do feel that that could potentially dangerous. especially if you have children, you could put their health in jeopardy. i feel that it is better to marry someone that doesn's have dirty habits such as smoking. but if you do marry a smoker, encourage them to quit. everything will be better for everyone.
