Doctors miss early HIV symptoms

This was a very shocking article that I found on BBC news, which explains how many doctors over see HIV symptoms in patients. Also in the article it also points out that many doctors themselves who are very educated in their fields still stigmatize. They mostly believe only gay men get AIDS, so chose to ignore signs when women and heterosexual men come in to see them. A disturbing matter still to be occurring in these times when we think people are more educated and would be aware, especially medical professionals.

“A study in Brighton found that 48% of HIV patients who had sought medical advice with their early symptoms had not been diagnosed.”

“There are approximately 7,000 new HIV infections in the UK every year, and as many as 50% are estimated to be passed on by people who are in the early stages of their own infection.”

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7518175.stm

This article is based in the UK, but if such minor problems are occurring in a fairly small country, there must be bigger occurrences of this in countries with bigger populations.

What are your views and thoughts on this issue? Can there be anything done to prevent this, since people who go to the doctors put their faith in their doctor and hope that he/she is doing the best for them?

it so sad to hear this things...

I hope the doctor can be more professional and examine their patients well

one thing that i hate is DISCRIMINATION.

If people discriminate PLWHA because they donno...its common.

but if DOCTOR discriminate PLWHA----IT' SO CRUEL. They already learned and got HIV lesson well. So--why they still afraid to examine PLWHA????

^_^

I really don't believe the problem here lies with discrimination. The BBC article has a quote from one doctor who "said that doctors were still guilty of being influenced by the stereotypical notion of the "gay man with HIV"."
What a sweeping statement! How could this one doctor know the attitude of all GPs in the country?

Some figures from the Health Protection Agency UK:
"an estimated 55% (4,260) of persons diagnosed in 2007 acquired their infection through heterosexual contact"
and:
"41% (3,160) through sex between men" - a minority!

I agree with you in that I can't for the life of me understand why this stereotype of 'gay man with HIV' prevails!

The fact is that the symptons of HIV are sore throat, fever and a rash. It is entirely possible that the cause could be something else, easily mistaken for the flu. In a country like Britain I believe the responsibility lies with the person to recognise that they may have been exposed and to ask for a HIV test. The predominant transmission mode of HIV is sexual intercourse; if you have unsafe sex-get tested. This is where the problem lies. Not with GPs.

The issue of HIV is not over yet,and I hope we can now focus our attention on methods to Educate and prevent HIV.Many of us in the past may have contributed in many ways to educate and assist those who are infected with HIV/AIDS, my sincere appeal to every one of us now,is not to give up. Let’s continue our effort so that we can render hope and education.

In monitoring HIV/AIDS globally, there are ground rules laid down by the United Nation and WHO which most government follows closely. Generally, people are unaware they are infected with HIV so a system has to be devised to monitor trends of the epidemic over time.

My 50cents contribution!
