[Poll] 21st century only White-collar workers in Western World?
July 21, 2008 - 02:07 PM

[quote]White-collar worker refers to a salaried professional or a person whose job is clerical, as opposed to a blue-collar worker, whose job requires manual labour. "White-collar work" is an informal term, defined in opposition to "blue-collar work".[quote] Wikipedia

According to some statistics, nobody wants to be blue-collar worker. Every year more and more people graduate from a university and with their newly obtained certification, they don't want to work in the fields harvesting crops. As a result, there is a lack of manual labor, so the loans increase in the sectors where manual labor is used, especially agriculture. These threads occur for example the increase of food prices.

I don't think that this is a real problem. If people don't want to be blue-collars anymore, it is because they can find better paid jobs as white-collars. Can anybody blame them?
So less people working in agriculture, let's say => rise in food prices (but, hey, who said we can't import food?)

If the governments try to make being a blue-collar more attractive by artificially increasing the wages of this category or by giving subsidies - it still means that money is being spent (OK, not by each and every individual when buying food, but by the State). So, again, why not import cheap food from other countries?

Some BIG factors in the rise in food prices are the high tariff and non-tariff barriers imposed to agricultural products (high, compared to those imposed on industrial products) and policies such as the EU Common Agricultural Policy (a total waste of money).

I would probably agree that "White-Collar" jobs have become more prevalent in Western society, but they will never phase out "Blue-Collar" jobs. Every office building still needs people to sweep, mop, and take out the trash, those commuting to their workplaces will need mechanics to work on their cars, and even though it was already brought up, people will still need to eat!

As for who will serve in this faculty if most people get college degrees? Well, many teenagers get part-time jobs in blue-collar fields, and there are also always immigrants, and those who just don't want to go to college. In addition, mentally challenged individuals frequently train to work in jobs like this.

Also, it is interesting to look at the reverse of this effect through outsourcing. More and more frequently, we are seeing White-Collar jobs being shipped off to India and other places in the East. So, I do not think that a divided white in the west, blue in the east world will ever happen.
