[Poll] Free Newspapers
July 7, 2008 - 01:59 PM
|
|
I live in London and as a city we are plagued by the distribution of free newspapers - 3 million a day are released on to the transport network and only a fraction ever get recycled. It is a gross waste of paper. I plan to run a campaign to try and make the publishers more rsponsabe and curb distribution. I want to know what other people think and if you have the same problems wherever you live? Please let me know what your opinions are. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you think free newspapers are needed in society?

In Greece there aren't any free newspapers except for Athens and Thessaloniki.
I definately agree with the distribution of free newspapers, because you get informed about everything you want (politics, sports, culture, music and so on) withought paying anything..
and Free newspapers do not have any benefits by supporting parties or politicians.... that's why they are independent right?

I do not know about the Ownership of free newspapers in Greece but in the UK they are owned by two companies. So although the may not be aligned with a political party, you are still receiving one company's politics, which are being circulated on a big scale.
It is then up to you whether you feel they are taking a political stance on issues and if you understand what stance they are taking throughout their publication as it may have an influence on their reporting and your understanding of an event without you realising it.
However, the content is not what concerns me with free newspapers. What concerns me is their environmental impact. How many are handed out across Athens, are their recycling facilities in place to dispose of them appropriately. Do people just litter with their free newspapers?
Maybe you could help tell me?
James

what if those newspapers used recycled paper?... mmm.. maybe the government should fund them to use recycled paper

Recycled paper in the production of free newspapers is something to aim for however in England, newspapers already ues over 75% recycled paper. It is a good condition to aim for but paper can only be recycled 5-7 times so there is a limit to how much we can recycle. From there we then have to question whether it is worth producing free newspapers in such large quantities, what are their other environmental impacts?

you are right about the environmental impact, but we shouldn't forget that free newspapers are useful for people to get informed about everything...
so... we end up again to citizens... they should recycle paper, glass and other materials...
they must support organisations for environment and also must get informed about eco-issues
NIce thread! you can post sth here
