Banning lethal pesticides
June 19, 2008 - 03:12 AM

Use of carbofuran, a lethal insecticide in Kenya's game reserves killed a number of wildlife like lions and vultures. Farmers and herders use it indiscriminately. This is the link. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7460008.stm
How do we stop use of dangerous pesticides which are killing our wildlife ? Do you think awareness campaigns at grass roots levels and emphasis on the importance of minimising man-land-animal conflict would help ?
This is a very worrying trend because there have been many reports in my country about the deaths of peacocks, vultures etc from such human activities.

It has been done before. Specifically, the concept of bio-accumulation is key to explaining this kind of issue. A substance that does not harm humans when it is blown into the air can kill someone if enough of it is eaten. The defining example of this is the DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethan) use in the United States that ultimately led to the killing of many eagles, their national symbol. Make sure you read Rachel Carson`s Silent Spring to get the full picture.

Furadan is being abused, and part of the problem is lack of regulation by the Kenyan government. Grassroots initiatives are a great way to start an awareness campaign. Couple that with protests and talking to your local government representatives, remind everyone that yours is a country of PEOPLE. You have the power to be the change.

And by you, I mean we. Basically, any initiative that used to be constrained to the locality it was from is now an issue for the world. This site here is a great example.

I will mention this shindig to my Minister of Parliament. If anyone else is up for a campaign, let me know.

Let us first define which are the lethal pesticides. Then let us review the history of pesticides and efforts to ban pesticides.Members may be encouraged to study/read the masterpiece, SILENT SPRING written by the great American woman writer RACHEL CARSON.After reading that book the concerned people will find probable ways to ban the lethal pesticides.Besides, review of the history will strengthen the members for moving ahead.

in response to rachel carson's silent spring being the "full picture":

carson claimed that DDT did much more than harm eagles. almost all of the declarations she made concerning the pesticide have been disputed by modern science. as a result of her seemingly false claims, western powers were moved to cut off all aid to the third world unless they banned the substance, which just so happened to be the #1 malaria killer in the world.

as a result, malaria related deaths have only increased, and for the most part, silent spring can be held accountable.

im not disagreeing with the sentiment that pesticides are harmful, i would just hesitate to site rachel carson as the authority. her book, in my opinion, did more harm than good.

a more level headed analysis might have avoided these deaths in addition to educating governments / grassroots organizations about the harmful things we put into the earth everyday.

One of my current pet peeves that is similarly related is the use of nicotine based pesticides that have killed of 1/3 of the bee population in the US over the past year, leading to decreased pollination and higher food prices, not to mention honey is used in a lot of products like beer. Although studies have been done showing the pesticide is the cause the government still won't stop using it and insists that more expensive testing be done. Different food companies that rely on fruit products, like Haegen Daas ice cream, have started to help fund the additional research in hopes of banning the pesticide but that'll take years and by then the damage can be irreversible.
