Malnutrition and Rising Food Prices
June 12, 2008 - 04:13 PM

Malnutition has become a huge prolem in India and other places around the world. One of the biggest reasons for this is rising food prices. Shouldn't governments around the world be helping those who already don't have enough on there plate to eat? Are rising food prices going to cause another epidemic around the world because people are unable to afford milk and fruits, which have key nutrients in them for people to survive? What are your veiws on this issue...and what do yuy guys think are some of the ways to help these people and push governments on helping these people. Here is an interesting article i found on BBC.

Honestly I wish I had hope for these people but I'm guessing the goverment doesn't see people dying because they have no food an issue yet, Do they actually think this problem is going to go away or disappear? well it wont and raising the food prices for these poor people is just plan cruel.

I think the problem of malnutrition is not because of scarsity of food it is because of undistribution of food and governement lack of good policies.

Agriculture studies and technologies must be supported to make more accesible the food.

I heard that many farmers in some countries are the ones most likely to be hungry, so yes, improper distribution of food I would agree is the problem if that is the case. How can we solve this problem?

Eating locally grown?

UN decided to double food rates by 2030. Unrealistic maybe? but at least the UN recognizes the shortage of food.

Should India and other suffering countries be given food aid or forced to import cheap food (leads to lower prices)? Or should their markets be protected from imported cheap food (leads to higher prices)? India's government gave a very loud answer of PROTECTION at the recent DOHA free trade talks. I don't really blame India. Indian farmers must be able to feed India's population. Cheap food from America and Europe (which is heavily subsidized) would destroy the domestic market for Indian farmers and drive millions of farmers into the already overcrowded cities seeking work. Therefore, HIGHER FOOD PRICES ARE GOOD for local farmers everywhere in the developing world. Given declining world production of oil and increasing transportation costs, these countries shouldn't neglect their own agricultural development and rely on food imports. America and Europe should subsidize their own biofuel production, instead of undercutting Third World farmers.

I agree, although there are many other factors that mediate too. For example, some people suggest a change of the economy model of their country is necessary.

Unfortunately, food prices are higher even in the U.S. despite the highest crop yield in the past decade (at least for corn, our most produced staple). However, with the government requiring increased use of bio-fuels, a good deal of our corn production ends in that use. This pushes up prices not just for Americans, but for importing countries like India who cannot sustain their burgeoning population with internal production.

Its too bad that most democrats don't see the hypocrisy of pushing for more clean energy sources (bio-fuels) AND denouncing the food crisis.

Well you see, it is not so easy changing economic structures anywhere but yes, it is easier and much more effective if Governments support local farmers and people eat local food. Also, if each one does something from its own situation or place, e. g. not eating more food than needed, growing its own food, and so on.

The effect of rising food prices in particular the rising cost of rice is not only having a disastrous affect in India but all of South East Asia. The truth of the fact is that the world has more than enough resources to go around, however, we still have billions of people in the world that are starving and malnourished. We are all accountable for the starving of people all around the world, from people in our own back yards to people half way around the world.

I do believe that some government intervention is in order for helping those in need of food. The only problem is located all of these starving people and packaging the food so it can be distributed equally. I dont blieve the price of milk and fruit is high enough to affect the quantity supplied or demanded of both of these products. I did find the article interesting and it raises some valid points. I think this will be a significantly lengthy process if and when the government decides to move in.

The reason that food is going up, is because oil is going up.

Notice that local food is the same price as it always was.. for now, that is. (Eventually the seller's own costs will provoke them to raise their prices)
Shipping food all over the world is getting expensive.

We need to tackle a different issue... that of finding alternative energy sources.

Malnutrition is a very serious problem in developing countries. It is directly proportional to poverty.
Governments of developing countries can tackle malnutrion by supporting farmers. There is plenty of fertile land uncultivated in Africa but the political will is lacking.
