[Poll] The Role of Science Centres in Building the Future
June 9, 2008 - 10:48 PM

hey there!

A group of us at TakingITGlobal are giving an Opening Keynote Presentation at the 5th Science Centre World Congress on Monday June 16th!

http://events.takingitglobal.org/19389

I am writing to ask for your input on the following questions which will help us as we prepare for our presentation:

(1) PAST - In your experiences growing up, what impact or influence did the Science Centre in your community have on who you are today?

(2) PRESENT - Can you tell us about the ways that you are using science and technology to create change in the world today?

(3) FUTURE - What is your vision for the role of science centres in building the future and how can this be achieved?

(1) PAST - In your experiences growing up, what impact or influence did the Science Centre in your community have on who you are today?

I love visiting science centres! When I was in elementary schools we had the chance to go to the Toronto Science Centre for a field trip. The Science centre to me has always been a place to learn about technology and science in a fun and interactive way. Instead of always learning from a textbook, we could learn about anything from the solar system to microorganisms in hands-on way. The Toronto Science centre taught me that to teach others affectively you need to engage them in a way that is meaningful to them. My childhood visits to the Science Centre were always positive which is why I still continue to visit Science Centres and museums all over the world to this day! Including NEMO, the science centre in Amsterdam! The Science Centre has made a positive impact on my life and I look forward to visiting it again!

(3) FUTURE - What is your vision for the role of science centres in building the future and how can this be achieved?

Science centres are an excellent resource for children, which is why I envision science centres always remaining kid and youth friendly. Education in science and technology is becoming essential, so I think every child should be able to visit a centre at least once in their life which means centres need to remain accessible and affordable for all everyone! Science centres should also welcome schools to do interactive workshops and activities so kids can get interested in science and technology.

I must admit I'm not a science buff, but one of my favorite childhood memories has to do with the Vancouver Science Center. I just remember going there with my parents and having so much fun- there was just so much to do and see! The best thing about the time I spent there was that it was hands on fun- I could actively try things out, such as the piano you could walk on . I now know that the fun I had was also a great learning experience! Learning in disguise!

Science Centers haven't really played a huge part in my life as I have gotten older, but since I have worked at TIG I have gotten to go to the Ontario Science Center- going there has made me realize that they do play an important role in our communities. There is something there for everyone to enjoy and learn about. No matter how old you are!

As I get older, I am looking forward to taking my own children to the Science Center and having them be fascinated by the things they experience, just like I did!

(1) PAST - In your experiences growing up, what impact or influence did the Science Centre in your community have on who you are today.

Science center was a place to be exposed to vast info and IMAX!

(2) PRESENT - Can you tell us about the ways that you are using science and technology to create change in the world today?

An accidental discovery in a science physics lab where water was used to cool down hot experiments (4000 degrees or more!) via plasma gases, and it was discovered the water had incredible properties (antiviral, antibacterial). This water has allowed for total rejuvenation! Plasma Activated Water (PAW)

(3) FUTURE - What is your vision for the role of science centres in building the future and how can this be achieved?

Key to helping understand the very complex nature of our world, yet science center can make it easier to learn. Tech Museum Awards are a good example of what TIG has already achieved!
