The world we live in
July 17, 2003 - 04:21 AM
|

This is very sad, but at the same time important that we see this. Imagine the reaction that this single photo has caused to those who have set eyes on it. It's really sad, and unfair, what happens in this world.
I guess to answer hannahbear, even though it was wrong for the photographer to leave the child there, I guess he felt helpless...think about what was not captured by the picture. The other dead bodies of children and adults eaten by vultures over the years (I am ceratin this was not the first or last victim to fall prey to hunger in the area alone). To add on to that I bet you 2 things, 1 - as we speak another victim of hunger is waiting to die as the child in the photo and 2 - not a few days or weeks before this photo was taken, another helpless soul had died cause of hunger in that same area.
My point being, we could blame Kevin cater for not having carried the child home and we could call him names, we do the same if not less everyday. I believe mr Cater gave what he could to help out (as a read through his profile I believe he used the camera as his tool to expose something people ingored) exposing what seems like a hidden reality in our own life. Because of him we were able to see other people lives, and poverty definations (if we can put it that lightly).
Because of him, maybe, hopefully people where able to intervene and start up projects that helped people in the community. Hopefully this image from Sudan was the last unfortunate death, with attention, sponsors and orgnisations coming in to stop such unnessary loss of life.
But what about other communities that hunger is still prevalent, what about our own communities, cities, countries -- do we not have people starving? do we not have street children, the homeless, the 'garbage children'? what are we doing not help them? You say the phtographer was wrong for living the child behind but are we not doing less than him? Do we not walk away and ignore as if we don't see those asking for help? I at times feel helpless and say I do not have money and so I can not do anything. Imagine if we where to take a photo of a child starving in the streets and where to show that photo to the world. Wouldn't that give attention to an issue that needs attention?
What Kevin Cater did to some extent was igniting a flame or torch so that sponsors and those that can help could 'see the reality', acting like a light tower to this comunity. Was he not an ambassorder for the poor? What can you do about those that need help? Are you willing to stop cursing others for not acting and get yourself to act?
I encourage or in fact challenge you to do the same if not more. Expose one hidden reality in your community; city or country that you think is not only a problem to your city but a problem to humanity. Take a photo, draw, write, discuss.. anything and for sure you are igniting that torch for people to see.
In fact this month of July if you expose that hidden reality, showing your defination of poverty or what it look like in your area? Enter your work to the gallery at
http://www.takingitglobal.org/express/gallery/contest.html
You could win a Hewlett Packard ScanJet 3570c scanner, or PhotoSmart620 digital camera, or PhotoSmart 7350 printer which can further be used as a powerful tool in exposing issues rarely talked about or shown in your community. So what do you think was the photographer a bastard for walking away or was this all he could offer? What would you have done in his situation? What ever the case my be, may he rest in peace and may the child in the photo find eternal and a better life where ever they are.

THE TIME FOR CRYING IS OVER...TIME FOR ACTION
July 17, 2003 - 09:41 AM

thats very deep, reggie. good. but i think the reason y mr carter committed suicide was because of "haunt". his helplessness/fear crippled him from doing what he suppose to have done.
we can cry all we want now......but the crying is only for a time.....we'll forget all about it later. the crux of the matter is what can we do as young people to reduce poverty? maybe we can begin in our country/community.
can anyone answer that?

Everyone says that, but where does it actually BEGIN? Like, once n awhile we hear of maybe ONE thing a nation does for another people, that is really drastic, and then it's all just talk. When will cries for "help" be understood fully?

.........I didn't know it was that bad. If anyone's interested to know WHY, it's because of a raging civil war, which is still rampant in africa. Liberia's in chaos now (there are no protection for civilians in wars there, their limbs are frequently chopped off) and everybody's prompting United States for a helping hand. Just read this off The Economist.
Very tragic.

why poverty?

Aquila you could read up why there is so much poverty as well as read personal experiences of people living in poverty, at http://www.takingitglobal.org/themes/poverty/
There are some cool projects to tackle, address or understand poverty and it effects indifferent communities. It would be interesting to find out if there are any projects in Sudan that our members are running.

This picture is haunting me.

This is why i am the insane person that i am. The preventable known and continued injustices of our species upon ourselves and others. They've been showing me this picture in words for over 42 of my conscious years now. What makes you think that your(our) punny efforts will change things unless you try to rally all humans with heart under one strong umbrella of righteousness? Old pillars of power are guided with good intent but by stubborn people taking instructions from many different selfish frictionning doctrines.
We need, but one new agreed upon one, in order for salvation to fully activate on a global scale.
"The poor, ill, weak, slow, young or hungry must not be picked on by any vulture of any species."
"Desired attainable stoppable natural recycling."
