I'll tell you where education is going, DOWN THE TUBES!!

I am absolutely outraged at the lack of funding the state of Massachusetts has. At my school, tons of funds go to special ed, and I actually to have something against that. I believe that they should have an equal opportunity, just like the rest of the school. So they should have the same funding as the rest of the student body. I can understand how their special need would be more expensie, but the school shouldn't deprive the rest of the community from the chance of education. We have to pay for sports, bussing, field trips,(obviously) school lunch and/or a snack+drink etc. We may as well be paying a less expensive tuition to attend PUBLIC SCHOOL. Oh ya, it is really CHEAP now adays. The state spends its money on the WAR or Food Stamps. People who need the food stampts desperately fully deserve them. But their are always those awful people who truly use well-fare just so they don't have to WORK HARD to feed their family. So what is you have to work at Burger King for a while, at least you are sitting on your cheap couch watching Jerry Springer while the tax payers keep on giving you money!
I don't even pay taxes yet I am frustrated at the raise and all the extra fee's we are paying. AND those tax returns everyone was so excited about were rip offs. That was all money we shouldn't have had to have to pay in the first place, that is why we got it back(probably not but I am on an unusual roll, go along with it(lol)!)

There's a federal law that says that school districts have to pay to meet the needs of disabled students- this way the burden can be shared by a larger group of people. Do you have any idea of how much it can cost to raise a severely disabled child? And the raising continues past age 18 or 21...they often need special care for their entire lives.
Moreover, these laws apply not only to the disabled. School districts also have to provide programs that challenge those who are academically gifted as well as those who struggle in school. So the kids who really get a bad deal are those who are simply "average".
You pay for a school lunch because your family can afford it. If it could not, the federal government would subsidize it for you, as it does for millions of low-income children.
As for your rant on welfare- yes, there are always going to be lazy people. But while changes are being made, for a long time you could receive more money from welfare than working a minimum wage job, and the earnings from your job worked against your welfare check, so many chose to stay at home. A minimum wage job, worked 40 or even 50 hours a week is still far, far from enough to support a family.
And really, compared to most countries, your education is probably wonderful. Didn't you say in a previous post that you lived in Cape Cod? Your profile says Boston, but if you're not in the city you're most likely attending a suburban public school, if I understood you correctly, which while not great, is a far cry from schools abroad that don't even have desks.

He he he ..... I put that when i first came on so that I would not give out too much info. And though supplies in public schol may be more plentiful, that does not mean that the eductaion is neccissarily better.
I was talking about equality when it comes to education. Obviously special needs students are going to be more costly and the proces will continue for a longer period, but that does not mean that education should be taken away from the average student.
About well fare, I might have been "ranting" but I wanted to make a point. I believe well fare is a good way for our government to take care of those who need it, but not those who apply first thing when a hard time hits. or to those who are lazy or stay on it for ten years. It has also come to my attention that those who need it most are either immigrants or too proud to take it. Neither of them complain. But they have the most right to do so.

I suspect you haven't had any close interactions with someone who is moderately to severely disabled. You're giving me the impression that with enough time spent, you can "fix" a disability. You can't. They don't go away. People, especially those with mild to moderate disabilities, can learn to work around their limitations. But that is not always the case. The ancient Greeks' babies who didn't seem quite "right" at birth were left on hillsides to die from exposure to the elements or by being eaten by a predator who came along....
You may want to do some research on welfare. I can't give you as complete of an idea as some good resources you could google for would.
It's no longer possible, and hasn't been for some time, for someone to stay on welfare for 10 years, unless there are extenuating circumstances, such as a severe disability. People don't end up on welfare if they're having a little bit of trouble- there are rules on who qualifies, and those who do really don't have a lot of money.
Money makes many things, including educations better. It buys not just supplies but more teachers and thus smaller classes, teachers who are more experienced, a better setting for learning and resources to help kids with all manners of needs- counseling, harder work, extra help.

Life can be real ironic sometimes..i mean in my country ppl are now "craving" for welfare coz no enough jobs are provided so unemployed actually lead a miserable life and ppl who deamand welfare actually base their defense that this "law " is applied in all modern western counntries.
As for the high expenses for education of disabled children..i wish u attended our workshop in which we tried to evalaute the problems these ppl suffer from and guess what..it was all about lack of proper education..
It's a misery,trust me..
You should be thankful that ur country is applying such programs for unemployed ppl and disabled children
The solution for ending the frustration of tax payers is not reducing the money applied in theses two catgories!!

Unfortunately, I must agree with you because of how incompetent my school's management is. Please hear this story...
A. Budget cuts take place, and 11 teachers had to be cut
B. My school gets new science wing with several labs. They equip each lab with 7 computers. They budgeted for the computers, but not the SOFTWARE to make them effective.
Honestly, I think that the science wing shouldn't have been built. Sacrifice luxuries for teachers -- I think it's a fair tradeoff...

Weird, stupid decisions are made every day, but at least you're getting a semblance of an education. My school invested in a new bell system with a dreadful tone sound and got some kind of gps-based clock system to make the clocks more accurate. Of course, after this was added, the clocks got worse.

comment to erattic enigma on my thinking that I can fix disabled people. Sorry if you misiterpreted what I was saying. I want EVERYONE to have equal education. By that I mean that all the needs of the mentally challenged and the diabled should be met, as should those who do not exceed into special care.

this is a very general comment. yes, education can be better everywhere. just like social security can be better everywhere, or health services. here in Norway we are complaining a lot about our hospitals, even tho our health system is one of the best funded in the world.
Personally I think we must stop always looking at the state/government for the quality assuring of the schools. We cannot have a situation where we just sit back and complain about the things. Actually, I believe the parents have a large responsability when it comes to the education of their children. Not saying that children should have home schooling, but there shold be more room for cooperation between the school and the home.
