Youth Forum Declaration
Youth Aspiration for a Superior Future
We, Young People of Africa, have the right to obtain all of the ICT tools that would allow us to access a dynamic information environment. We should be introduced to the information society and grow competent using ICT in order to expand our knowledge and achieve an advanced level of participation for the benefit of Africa.
As Africa 2008 Youth Fellows, we have been privileged to be given the opportunity to broaden our awareness of ICT. Hence, our main goal is to connect ourselves to the rest of the youth worldwide, to enlarge ICT coverage in Africa, as well as to deliver ITU messages regarding development and the benefits of ICT technology.
To achieve our main goal we are committed to promote ICT through the following:
1- Accessibility:
By playing the middle role between suppliers, governments, regulators and investors, we will have the capability to connect the unconnected and by being innovative, reduce software and hardware prices.
2- Bridging the digital divide within the continent:
By initiating a website to establish a connection among youth from different socio-economic backgrounds, and by sharing our experiences and opinions, we will work to bridge divisions through ICT in different sectors.
3- Raising awareness about ICT technology:
We will extend training in how to adapt and utilize ICT throughout Africa with the objective of increasing awareness and availability of current and future technologies.
4- Promoting youth governmental cooperation
We believe that it is important for young people to communicate and collaborate with their governments. We will do so by building capacity through ICT related sectors.
5- Promote young people to create projects and businesses
Projects will contribute in major fields, which include health care, education, participation by women, freedom, Internet safety, and social participation. Governments, regulators and the private sector should be encouraged to develop funding mechanisms for youth - initiated ICT related projects and businesses.
6- Cyber Security and ICT-Safety
By encouraging regulatory authorities to address cyber security, cyber peace and ICT-safety in ICT policies and regulations, and through the dissemination of information we can promote a culture of peace to avoid and resolve conflicts in Africa.
We hope by addressing the afore-mentioned we can contribute individually and collectively towards improving ICT penetration and its affordability for the betterment of Africa -- today and tomorrow.
