The Ningaloo reef
July 12, 2003 - 08:37 AM

Ningaloo Reef, located 1200km north of Perth on Australia's north-west coast, is home to 200 species of coral and 500 species of fish - a place where loggerhead turtles, dugongs, whale sharks and humpback whales visit on their migratory path.

In the heart of this unique place, developers are planning to build a resort to cater for over 2500 people, and a marina for hundreds of power boats. The resort will also include hundreds of residential lots - likely to be holiday homes.

Potentially devastating environmental consequences will result as whale sharks, dugongs, nesting turtles and migratory birds are disturbed by the increased numbers of boats and the water is polluted by sediment and fertiliser run-offs from gardens.

On Friday 4th July 2003, the Premier of Western Australia, the Honourable Geoff Gallop, announced that his Government was REJECTING the controversial proposal for the marina and large-scale resort at Maud’s Landing, Ningaloo Reef.

The Premier says he will now write to the Australian Prime Minister advising him of the Government's intention to pursue World Heritage listing for Ningaloo Reef and ask for his support.

While this decision marks a momentous step forward in the future of this region, there is still much work to be done to ensure that good planning guides sustainable development and protection of the unique environmental values of the Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range
