[Poll] School Censorship and Dictatorial Control
May 13, 2008 - 01:36 PM

I go to a high school in Ontario Canada. Every day in our school whenever any of us log onto a computer we are immediately under surveilliance by our school librarian and we have our movements and actions constantly monitered for any sort of so-called negligent action. They can at any time deny us our freedom to express ourselves as well as our freedom to explore the world. How can they continue to justify this breech of our fundimental rights as Canadian Citizens by invading our privacy as well as comprimising our personal rights? I think these blocks on our freedom should be removed before we face something similar to China's great firewall.

Though easy to see as a breach in y ou rpersonal sercutiry, they aren't stopping you from being free. the terminal that you are loggin on to is a privilege, not a right. They are letting you use their computers and their internet connection so that you will have the ability to take advantage of the abundant amount of resources on the computer. Also what they are doing, in some circumstances, is stopping you from breaking the law. As many may have noticed, sites are blocked for things such as Nudity and Sexual content. They're blocked simply because a person who would be at your age, seeing it is a highschool that is being spoken of, would not normally be the legal age to view anything like that found on the internet.

The other part of this firewall is to stop those who wish to abuse that whicht has been given to them. They use it to do things that aren't productive, as you will normally hear the teachers call it. In my situation, yes, I am abusing the ability to use online resources for class work, seeing as I'm posting this in my data class.

A simple solution would be the ability to sign up to non-restricted computers, or probably limited restriction computers, which would give you the ability to play whatever games you choose to, but could only be used by people who were either on a registered spare, or during time that is not for class, such as lunch. Naturally a sign up would be required and much time would be wasted doing this, but that's how it works sometimes.

No, I wouldn't say that this is anywhere near the same as the China Firewall that has been in place, though I'm not sure if it still is or not. This isn't being done for control. This is being done for censorship so that the use of the internet at school is not banned by a group of ragging parents who think that their kid is looking at pornography while sitting in class. It's probably as simple as that.

I concur with the previous poster, but feel the need to add the idea that it's not even dictatorial--or at least you haven't provided enough information to support that claim. Dictatorial would mean that one individual is making arbitrary decisions, without consulting a governing body. If the parents and teachers in your community support this, and the decisions are made by an elected school board, it's not dictatorial.

There are certain things that I believe they have the rights to censor such as porn or whatever. But at my school they don't allow us to go on Facebook because it's "time wasting" they blocked hotmail until they realize that everyone emailed their homework to themselves to print it later. Maybe I have an overactive imagination but our system admin is a Star Trek loving fascist. The librarian walks around and looks over your shouder and tells you to show him what you're doing. He's an angry little man. Half of the sites are blocked even thngs that have nothing wrong with them. They do a broad overall ban and they don't even let you complain
