Book smarts or street smarts?

In your opinion, how relevant is a high school/college education versus the 'university of life'? Is one more important than the other, or are they both equally integral to a whole and rounded education?
Is obtaining a post secondary education a motivation based on personal interest, to further your knowledge and develop your intellect, or do/would you attend college or university with the main purpose of having a safe base on which to launch a career, obtain a steady job, or to have a better of chance of being financially independent sooner rather than later?
Just some things to think about! Let me know your thoughts.

Stephanie,
First off, great question. I attended a private international school for about 6 years of my education (middle and high school), in my case I was taught both book smarts and street smarts. Book smarts obviously because it’s a school and meant to teach individuals. However I also graduated street smart because the school focused on volunteering, and community service.
I know that everyone isn’t so lucky to go to an international school, so I think that an education is important, but only as important as the teachers who teach it. Some teachers could care less about their students, and only want them to move on to the next grade. Other teachers want their students to succeed in life, that’s the difference.
You asked a great question about whether or not a post secondary education was out of interest or basis for a job. For me personally I actually had to think about it. I am not sure I actually like attending university. I’m in my first year and honestly I feel the pressure of trying to beat out everyone else. I’m in such a hurry to get out; I’m taking an extreme course load so I can graduate in 2 years. I just want to get a job, not be in school. Like you said be stable sooner rather than later. Don’t get me wrong some subjects I really enjoy learning about but I could care less about an extensive writing class. If money didn’t matter, I’d probably be a book critic. Live near the beach; read a new book every couple of days. Great question, really got me thinking.
