Does the post-secondary school you choose really matter?

Many Canadian high school students in their last year of school are in the midst of deciding which university or college to attend for their post secondary education. I'm not very familiar with the education systems in other countries, but I can assume that many young people around the world are finding themselves in similar positions at this time of the year. Deciding which school to attend is one of the most difficult choices to make in as a young adult. Programs and courses offered, location, campus size and feel, friends attending...there are lots of factors to consider when choosing a school.
Some feel that in the end, it doesn't really matter which school you attend, as long as you get a degree/certificate/some type of recognition that you completed a post secondary education. It is true that for many communications, humanities and social sciences-based programs, you can go on to work in a variety of fields and capacities that don't necessarily have direct affiliation with what you studied in university.
I've heard from others that the particular school they went to was the perfect school for them, and that they feel they wouldn't have been as happy going to any other institution. Also, some choose to enter into specialized program areas that require many years of preparative studies and highly specific course loads (ie. medicine, law, accounting/business, etc.)
In your experience, whether you have already graduated from a post secondary institution or are about to attend one, how do you view the issue of choosing the right school? Do you feel that the school you attend shapes you as an individual, and that depending on where you go, you will develop differently? Or do you think that wherever you go, as long as you obtain a degree or some type of certification- the school itself is secondary?
What factors did you consider when choosing your school, and what made you finally decide to go where you did/choose the school you will attend next year?
