Israel at 60: a tough love letter from an Agent of Moral Courage
May 8, 2008 - 04:27 PM

Young journalist Roi Ben-Yehuda, who has published a "tough love letter" to his homeland. An excerpt is below, and the entire piece is located here.

After reading Roi's piece - what message do you have for Israel on her 60th birthday?

*****************
"At sixty, you are a wedding of land and idea, a fantastical union over two thousand years in the making. It is no wonder that it took the imagination of a playwright to father your present incarnation into concrete existence. People doubted you all along. They said of your parents (who are also your children) that they are dreamers; that they have no right; and that they are going against the hand of God. But your fathers and mothers replied, "If you will it, it is no dream!" That “history gives us a right.” And that sometimes “miracles need help to materialize.”

...

Indeed, you have taught us the virtue of patience, tenacity, and optimism. You have, once again, given us a home. A home that in the coarse voice and words of my grandmother, a woman who survived that terrible night under the European skies, is the only place in the world where the words "dirty Jew" mean a Jew who has not taken a shower. At sixty years young, you are an amazing success story and we are your grateful children.

But grateful does not mean blind. When you shine a light on an object, you are also bound to get its shadow. And there is no escaping the fact that your shadow is Palestine.

Today, dear Israel, you are standing on the back of another people. A people who have become a broken mirror image of yourself. They dream your dream, fear your fears, and suffer your pains. Just like you they drink from the wellspring of their grandmother's tears and they nourish their souls on their grandfather's scars. Just like you, they are rooted in holy soil, and they too are inheritors of an unholy land...."

While Jews have suffered a lot in their diaspora, it's unfortunate to say that - in the course of founding a state for themselves - they have kicked another people out of their land, or as I refer to call it - exported their diaspora to Palestinians.

And just as a reminder, the Arabs and Muslims have been through their history the best who accomodated jews in their lands, in contrast to the persecution they faced virtually elsewhere.

60 years from Nakba, I only hope that Palestinians people can lead normal life soon, after their long strugle.

a state should be made for the palestinian people in the west bank, but it should not include jerusalem.
many israelis and even more jews in general would gladly have israel give up the west bank-- very little good has resulted from israel's possession of it. one state cannot, however, just usurp the capital of another. that's weird, i must say, and sorta inconsiderate, considering it's the center of the jewish world.

People always seek for independent when there is evils in the land as for why shouldn't brothers live together peaceful? Nobody owns land even a portion of it as we will live and die leaving it behind for future generations.

We should share what God has given us amicably both jews and Gentileswink.

Well jeremybentham...

I find what you said very strange. In part, you think that Palestinians should get the West Bank, because it's of very little use to Israel, and not for another reason. And you find that it's illogical that Israel 'gives up' Jerusalem. I want to remind you that the United Nations (and not the Palestinians or Arabs) consider East Jerusalem together with the West Bank, occupied lands!

In fact, you words are contrary, in spirit, to that courageous man who wrote his tough letter!

glorious,
the palestinians should be given the west bank because it a large area of israel which is primarily palestinian and widely associated with the proposed palestinian state. what i meant by it not being of much use to israel is that it would not harm israel to relinquish it. east jerusalem IS a part of the conquered territories. i'm not argung that it isnt.

there is still need to continue the fight for absolute freedom because no true freedom is in-view amidst bombing and incessant shooting on the streets and across the borders.

eRichie: The latter half of your statement is poignant. The beginning, a little ambiguous. Can you elaborate?

What would your vision absolute freedom and a peaceful situation look like?

I'm glad the writer of that tough letter takes time and puts effort to engage in self-critique. It's important and I find it unfortunate that some tend to label such people self-hating Jews simply because of their ability to look closely in the mirror.

On a related note, while I do recognize the suffering Palestinians have to go through, I must say that the attention the Israel-Palestinian conflict received is simply disproportionate to the volume of blood spilled. Strangely, we can't seem to get enough of it and so the MSM happily continues to feed us the dramatized drama.
