Is college education a right or a privilege?
May 8, 2008 - 09:26 AM

This is a hot topic among students in my school.

One side argues that getting a bachelor's degree should be accessible to everyone across all income groups. They vouch for fully subsidizing (others, partially) college education. On the other hand, we have those who say that a college diploma is a privilege to those who can afford it.

What do you say?

i think it should be given for the people who would actually work for it. if someone is just gonna not try they shouldn't be given the opportunity. but if someone wants to learn and is willing to give their time and effort they should be given the privelege no matter how much money they have.

I like this topic.

Any education should be a right, be that primary right up through to post secondary and beyond. However, there are not enough institutions around to supply "free education" to all of those wanting to attend post secondary education right now.

In an ideal world, there would be a college with enough room for everyone who wanted to go. This would be ideal. Because we live in a day and age where this is not financially possible for even the most prosperous countries in the world, I'll move more towards a privilege.

So my view on it goes like this:

More schools means more of a right.
Less schools means more of a privilege.

I don't think the number of post-secondary institutions has anything to do with college being a right or privilege. No one should be deprived of a education due to lack of financial resources.

Education in general from elementary to University/College to grad schools should be a right for all. Education should be free. Universities/Colleges charge far to much for their programs, and clearly not everyone is unable to afford this "luxury". Clearly education is becoming a luxury more than anything.

I do agree that everyone should work hard to recieve education, and be determined in everything they do.

This is an issue that is near and dear to my heart as well. I am actively campaigning for the DROP FEES movement in Ontario, Canada (a campaign of the Canadian Federation of Students, by the way). We are having a provincial day of action on November 5h for the reduction of tuition fees.

Just think about this: in 1900 all education up to grade 12 was free in Ontario. The same is true today. However, to enter the job market in 1900, all you needed (for the majority of occupations) was your high school diploma. Today, most jobs in the developing industries and commercial districts of Canada require, at minimum, a B.A.

It s a right!

Based on the Philippine constitution, every individual has the RIGHT to education. College is part of it...

Its just like there are some institutions or universities which respect your right to be educated yet it is still a privilege that you are part of their studentry based on qualifications set by the said institutions and of course, one's ability to afford tertiary education in a known institution..

In my country it is actually a privilege - not a right. why? Only students with a B+ average get admitted into public universities, and the government subsidizes their tuition. The rest who can afford it go into private universities or pay the full amount in public universities.
SO in the end you only get into college if you are really smart or wealthy enough to afford an education. there's no 2 ways about it.

I think that college education should be a right and not a privilege, but it is currently not treated that way. On the other hand however I do think that there should be some sorts of standards towards who is allowed to go to university. I think that if absolutely everyone were allowed to go to university or college then it might actually hurt people's morale because not everyone is able to to think in such an abstract way, just like not every one is able to think or perform the difficult technical or hands-on based learning that is required at college. If college/university were to be made a right, I think that there would have to be increased support for other types of learning as well, such as arts schools, trades schools, directed independent study schools where you get to learn what you like on your own terms but have to share it with other people.
