Agents of Moral Courage: Darfurian refugees

In international law, large-scale atrocities against a group of people - including widespread attacks on human dignity - are considered crimes against humanity.
One of the greatest crises of our time is the genocide happening in Darfur, Sudan. Many agents of moral courage - from all over the globe - will be needed to end the crimes against humanity happening in Darfur. That is exactly we are featuring two agents of moral courage this month instead of just one. We will also give you concrete tips on how you can help to end the suffering there.
In Darfur, Muslim-on-Muslim violence has resulted in more than 450,000 deaths. Arab militias, seeking land and resources in the region, have used widespread violence against Sudan's black Muslims. Over 2.5 million people have been displaced since troubles began there in 1991.
Darfurians Mohamed Adam Yahya and Suad Monsour are taking a stand - and demanding that others do the same.
Learn about what Yahya and Monsour are doing by clicking here.

I've corresponded via email with the fearless and brave Mohamed Yahya before. The man is a real fighter and true inspiration.

Really? What was that experience like? It would be wonderful if you'd consider sharing the link to his feature with him, provided you're still in contact.

Here's someone really cool: Emmanuel Jal. He's a Sudanese refugee and upon coming to the US, he became a hip hop musician... He uses his music to tell his story. He's pretty incredible (and he even has a new album coming out...) It's incredible when people who have suffered so much can use that experience productively and for so much good, often more than people who have never suffered can do.
I don't really know how to introduce this issue, but it's something I've been thinking about, so here goes: Israel (not) letting in more Sudanese refugees. I almost think Israel has an obligation to accept these refugees, considering the events leading up to the establishment of Israel (I'm talking about the Holocaust) and the Jewish promise of "Never again"... not to mention the proximity. On the other hand, maybe it's unfair to expect one tiny country to absorb thousands of refugees every time a people is persecuted, which, let's face it, is more often than anyone would like. Any thoughts?

Really interesting contribution, elanaeden. Thanks so much!
What do people think? Before I chime in (and I will!) I'd love to see what others think of elanaeden's questions.

On the question of Israel and Darfurian refugees:
As elanaeden pointed out, this is not a simple issue. Israel should do what it can to help - even go beyond reason. But to single it out, is not fair or moral.
From an idealistic perspective, Israel ought to have its gates open to all who are persecuted - perhaps being Jewish boils down to that. The bible commands the Jews to use their degrading experience as slaves in Egypt in order to love and treat the "stranger" with kindness.
The golden rule, in its positive dimensions says that we must do unto others what we would have them do unto us - Jesus was Jewish, remember? If we raise that rule to the national level it reads: "A nation should treat other nations, the way it would want to treated."
And then there is the indelible lesson of the Holocaust - Never Again!!!! Not never again for the Jews, but for everyone.
So, yes, according to its sacred sources and history, Israel should fight for the life and dignity of all people.
But that is the idealistic perspective. It should serve as a guide. But like all things, if followed blindly and to the extreme it would lead to the self-destruction of the actor in question. Israel cannot open its gates to all. It is a small and struggling country, which cannot take the weight of this or similar projects alone.
If anyone should lead they way here, it is the the US. After all, what are the words engraved by the (Jewish) poet Emma Lazarus on the statue of liberty?
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

The unresolved wars in Darfur, which has cut across spectrum is worrisome and call for deep and sober reflection. Manhandling and brutalization is unacceptable. I kindly urge the UN to reinforce to make sure the killings of innocent children and women in Darfur are put to an end.
