Females in the world?
July 7, 2003 - 02:10 AM

I'd like to know how people around the world perceive their local females. This issue is of interest to me because the treatment varies so noticably between country to country, that at first I was shocked. When I was younger, I believed women had the same rights as men, that all people were created equally. Then I found the loophole; the treatment of people. It is all nice and cheery to say all men/women are equal, but when it comes time to act upon it, I feel women are often pushed aside. The same is true for the treament concerned in the equality of it all. Boy/men and girls/women always receive different treatment when judged upon the same issue.
Even here in America women must fight for power, and if the get what they earned, just as any man would, they are told the are unwomanly and are also called bad names which I won't metion.
This is not even the worst of it though. But before I continure to rant on further, what do you HAVE to say about the matter. What have you observed of how women are treated in your country. Hopefully I am wrog about what I believe to be the truth.

Major steps, but?
July 12, 2003 - 03:14 AM

Women in Egypt have a better position and get a better treatment than many ppl would assume.
Of course, you can still find women who get hit by their husbands( like every where else) but u can also find women who were recntly given the right to work as judgessmile
I blieve we entered a new era during the last ten years..
u can find women in every position..e.g.very successful business women.
In the past married women had to get their husabnd's formal permission to leave the country..now they don't.
In the past only men could sue for divorce now women can do as well..
Maybe all this sounds pretty simple&no big deal for you but for us these are major steps..
However i have to admit that all these changes have only occured in the big cities.Women in rural area still live like 50 years ago with men taking every decision and shaping their lives..

Actually, this ties into a question I wanted to ask - I was hanging with some of my guy friends this morning talking about the ladies and each friend - to a man - reported that they had better luck with women when they pretended to be dumb. It uccured to me that I did better that way to.

Why is this an effective strategy? Why are women more likely to sleep with a guy who isn't very bright? Is it because they want a relationship with the smart guys or what? We all know the addage of the bad boys getting the ladies - but its true!

A little explaination from the ladies would be helpful here to my understanding this.

Well, I don't really know from experience, but isn't it supposed to go the other way around? There've been studies that show that men (in the US at least) generally don't want wives who are smarter or more successful than themselves.

I've never heard about it applying to guys though.

I think marriage is different because it is more about security and life success - I'm talking in terms of the dating scene

LUKE

The bit about the bad boy thing. Though I am young, I consider that my observations are accurate. What I think is that boys considered "bad" are attractive for their dangerous image, but in the long term a relationship will not work with those types unless it is an act. I find that physical features are overpowering intelligence now-adays. Personally, nothing can get better when my guy friends can carry on a converstion with me, about a topic I enjoy discussing. Looks and images can only carry you so far; therefore I think that intelligence is one of the top qualities that draws a woman to a man.

You are right, woman all around the world can be brutalized whether they live in rural parts or suburban parts of the world. Also, I did read about the gigantic changes Egypt has made with regard to women. I want to congratulate Egypt's population of woman who dress in traditional garb, for I feel that it gives them more respect than waltzing around in a bikini top. Mnay countries have made huge progress, I was just wondering how much is visible depending on where you are located.

Change in Egypt
July 14, 2003 - 04:02 AM

Well, I have read the thread so far and I would like to comment on opinionram14 from my own experience. I am Egyptain and I am velied, yes it it makes you feel just wonderful being protected in such a respectable dress and as if it tells the other "Hey, she is Heavenly-Protected". As for the issue of the change of women's position in Egypt, I agree with Shimaa83 that this has mostly taken place in the major cities and efforts on the national levels are now addressing the problem in the rural areas. That is why Egypt has declared 2OO3 as the Egyptian Girl Year with a positive and effective media focus on Women's rights to education and marriage.

What about places like Turkey?
July 15, 2003 - 10:16 AM

...where honour killings still occur?

Case in point: A pregnant woman in Turkey is stoned to death because she is not married.[link]

Any thoughts?

^^^^
I read an article the other day that said Turkey was going to toughen its laws regarding honor killings- it has to, in order to make a successful bid to join the EU. Honor killings disgust me. I don't even see how it could be sanctioned by the Qu'ran, if killing is not. Isn't murder a bigger sin than sex outside of marriage?

Speaking of which, (well, not really) my mother almost got stoned once (as in, big rocks, her) for wearing a skirt that some guy in the former Soviet republic she was visiting perceived as being too short.

Yes, I have heard of some of those clothing taboos, and a lot of them are pretty radical.

For example, in the Taliban regime, it was allowed for a man to assault a woman in public if her clothing even rode up to show her ankles.

On a more personal note, I know of a person who had acid thrown at her face by a passing car for not covering it appropriately and in agreement with the religious customs in the region.

The acid scarring scares me a lot. It's no longer getting quite as much media attention here, but I assume it's continuing nonetheless. But the idea of disfiguring a woman for her entire life, preventing her from ever having another relationship out of sheer selfish jealousy astounds me.

Women in my country are treated very much the equals of men. For eg, we have the Women's Charter to protect the women in the case of divorce etc. In the working scene, women are also given equal opportunities to prove their working capablities. I guess in my country, there is an equality between men and women.

In my country, women are still discriminated.
I'd like to ask why do some people allow men to marry 2 women and even more? Sometimes even some women themselves allow this injustice. What are the GOOD reasons for some people to allow this discrimination? I don't think there is any reason.

As I understand it, Islam originally allowed men to take more than one wife to protect their brothers' widows from poverty. However, that hardly seems to be the sole source of secondary and tertiary wives today. I think now (if not before) men who marry several times are doing so for their own selfish reasons. The same holds true in the break-away Mormons who keep getting media attention for polygamy... the men just want sex, often from very young girls. When one such character was on trial, all of his wives and children (and there were a lot) came out to support him- I think that the women are essentially brainwashed.
