I think that's an extreme thought.

There are different types of factories and some are essential for development and even to provide some of the modern amenities.
What is feasible is to build and operate factories in an eco-friendly way. For example keeping strict control at every stage from the proper use of raw materials to the treatment of waste. And the factories which violate these terms and conditions should be closed !

At the same time some of the developing nations cannot afford to maintain the same standard as the developed nations hence they need to be supported and empowered to make these environmental friendly choices.

Urbanisation and development need not always be at the cost of the environment.

You can also check out the following site which provides some interesting insights.

I do not think closing all of the factories are such a good idea. Factories makes stuff that are use in our life, without those stuff, how do we get to school on time? How do we eat without anything? Factories do make pollution, but closing all the factories will make the problem worse. I strongly suggest that you should not close all factories world-wide.

So what you are saying is that nations who can afford to have tough environmental laws should and developing nations shouldn't? or at least the richer nations should pay the price for developing nations?

First off, India is not a poor nation, yet is is on the top 3 of enviromental offenders. according to to those who subscribe to this. Second, how is this not redistribution of the worlds wealth?

This video here answers many questions ...

I dont think I was advocating anything on behalf of India and I never said India is a poor nation ...definitely not !

The following sites should also shed some light on the issue in general

For your second question regarding the redistribution of wealth... i would say why not?
SInce the poor countries have to pay for the environmental damage caused by the rich countries then why not make the rich countries help these nations to make sustainable development following environment- friendly ways. Nobody loses in this deal...

Environment damage of rich countries on poor
By Roger Highfield, Science Editor

A study has revealed the extent to which poorer countries are trampled by the huge environmental footprints of the rich.

The environmental damage caused by rich nations disproportionately impacts poor nations and costs them almost £920 billion, on par with or exceeding their combined foreign debt, according to a first-ever global accounting of the dollar costs of countries' ecological footprints.

Meanwhile, the effect of poor on rich nations, such as Britain, is less than a third of the impact that the rich have on the poor.

Because the global environment does not respect political borders, the impact of ecological damage wrought by one country can be felt across the world. To illustrate that point, an American team has attempted to determine which nations are driving ecological damage and which are paying the price.
..............

.Low-income countries will bear significant burdens from climate change and ozone depletion. But these environmental problems have been overwhelmingly driven by emission of greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting chemicals by the rest of the world," Srinivasan says.

"For your second question regarding the redistribution of wealth... i would say why not?"

for the simple fact that redistribution of the worlds weath only empowers those nations that are wealthy. All this does in any society is take the power from the people by destroying middle classes and strengthens governments who only see in the best interest of themselves

Secondly, it brings us closer to globilization which threatens the sovereign power of individual States. We have this idea, and misconception, that we can all be on the same page, but thousands of years of hisotry have proven that we cant...and that there is balance in not being so. I love the fact, for example, the India had different cultures, beliefs, ideals than the U.S. to change that would be madness. I equate that will killing children. WE NEED THAT BALANCE!.

If there's anything the global community should do, its develope the strenghts and not feed the weakness. If gobal environmental messures are enacted, which would be a crime in and of itself, they what is good for a rich nation is twice a good for a poorer nation

also, i think we need to be dealing with a bigger issue than poorer countries getting money from richer countries. or even shutting down all factories so we can live like cave men again.

the root of this problem is the sun...we should be working as a global community, in the name of peace, love and unicorns to destroy it. honestly its our only hope.

in case there are any traslation issues for the readers of this...thats called sarcasm.

DOWN WITH THE SUN!!!!

No need to close all of the factories of the world, but change must occur. If you are interested in sustainable development and tired of the developed world pointing their fingers East,

Check out Greenhouse Development Rights, the latest [and possibly the most promising and fair] of the burden sharing programs from the guys at EcoEquity.

The first policy strategy that takes third world development into full consideration, all the while operating on ratifications made at the UNFCCC.

Watch the presentation on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF-HdCZ0ESQ

Or download the full PowerPoint (with notes) and learn about it for yourself:
http://www.ecoequity.org/GDRs/

Their rationale for dividing responsibility (and the percolation of technology and money from North to South that they explore) will excite many of you, I'm sure. Take the time to read about it and see for yourself. Pass it on if you can, this is a movement that with a lot of attention, is sure to take off.
