NASCAR = HUGE FUEL WASTER?

I was just shfting channels after channels one day. Then, I noticed NASCAR on FOX. I watched about 5 minutes of the race. I noticed that a lot of racers went into the pit stop to re-fill on gas, and change their tires. After watching just 5 minutes of the race cars in the pit stop, I was wondering to myself, "Does NASCAR waste a lot of fuel?". I mean think about it. I have watched a couple of NASCAR races, and on average, each racer pits to get a re-fill on fuel about 3-4 times each race. If you compare that with 30+ racers, thats a colossal amount of fuel being wasted, for ONE RACE. Image the Sprint Cup Series, they consist of about 49 drivers, and about 30+ races (I think). Thats a lot of fuel thats being wasted. Is it true that NASCAR racers run on fuel, or some other sort of liquid that just happens to make the cars run speeds of 200+ mph?

Well, from the information I know. Cars which gets a fast start off will automatically waste more gas then our normal starts. Some of those race cars even slos down like an emergency, when you actually stop like that, the gas you waste will get higher. Different cars have different engines, some of the engines are great, goes very fast, but waste lots of gases. With the other kind of engine, those are the bad ones that waste less gas while going slower than the other one. Hope this helps your question.

The issue is not the racers at NASCAR. The issue is the fifty thousand people driving out to the track and then having a party in the parking lot with their fancy SUV`s and RV`s burning propane to cook burgers from the other side of the country, and slapping that in between condiments grown from everywhere else on the planet.
NASCAR is not a problem. The lifestyle that goes along with it is. NASCAR is all about promotin products - look at the cars and you can see what I am talking about. The whole thing is a big long commercial advertisement for the highest bidder, encouraging all 75 million fans to buy something.
Sustainabilty is possible. But not when a party involves the whole state of Florida.

I definitely agree with Kyle and Lucurio that both the races themselves and the lifestyle that goes along with them are HUGE fuel wasters. I hate NASCAR. I can understand why people enjoy watching football (American or otherwise), basketball, and even baseball (ugh), but NASCAR is not a sport!

Not only does it waste fuel, on both parts, but people could be doing something else during the 3-4 hour long event to help the Earth and cut down on fuel emissions that pollute the air and start to cause global warming.

It's a waste, but only because NASCAR sucks. There is a lot of energy being wasted by many other things. We ship tons cotton to China and back so they can make it into NASCAR hats and other things for us. Just all the fans driving about their daily routine in their own inefficient cars waste a lot of gas. The English idiom is that it's a drop in the bucket.

Well it certainly is a huge waste of fuel and resources, but so is formula one and all other car races, but is it possible to get people to stop going to these things? i highly doubt that! So what we need to focus on is making cars that are way more fuel efficient do the race car community and the environmentalists can meet halfway- necessity is after all the mother of invention.

well i agree with all of you that its a waste of fuel . but i do have a question do you all think of formula one as nascar racing i mean that both have the same problem which is fuel consumption but in my opinion formula one is great and you can enjoy watching it as you can see how proffesional drivers are able to handle the cars on different curves and angles ,not like the nascar they go around in circles if im not wrong and they end up crashing most of the time .
