Revival of Storytelling

On Saturday night, my partner and I took her father out to see Stuart MacLean do his Christmas show for The Vinyl Cafe - a weekly CBC radio show. As always, MacLean was brilliant. He is one of the best storytellers out there with an ability to connect with his audience through humour and the absurdities of our daily lives. No wonder both shows in Winnipeg were sold out.
It seems to me that storytelling is making a comeback these days.... There's only so long you can watch special effects and movies before you get an urge to use your ears and your imagination. A well-told story is grounded in local culture, but can be understood by people half a world away.
I don't know to what degree storytellers are networked in other countries, but those of you in the US may want to consider checking out the National Storytelling Youth Olympics and Storytelling Foundation International.
