What makes a person to belong to a nation?

What does it take for soeone to say "I am American" or "I am South African" or "I am Italian?"
Is it only the fact that our parents and thus their genes belong to the country where we were born?
Is it because of the upbringing - can you find a set of unique characteristics for any nation?
is it the language, the environment, the culture?
Or is everything learnable, takeable, adoptable?
I personally never had an exhaustive answer to this question. Only once, I had an Armenian guy who told me, "you belong to a country if you feel you belong to it, there is no way to rationalize or to put into universal terms what means to belong to a country, it is subjective and niether the langauge nor other things will make you be part of the nation if you don't feel being part of it."
What is your take on this?

Anyway i believe what makes one to belonf to a nation is being proactive to societal issue and for the well-being of the people in the nation. By speaking in one voice.

I've been told that because I'm born in America, I am American, no ifs, ands, or buts. However, in America, we often have to fill out questionaires asking to identify our nationality: Hispanic/Latino, White/European descent, Middle East, Asian/Pacific Islander, Black/African, or Native American. But these are VERY general. I'm sure someone from Russia might not consider their nationality the same as someone from France or from Canada. At the same time, can we really claim a nationality if we've never been to that country? For instance, I grew up with a Croatian family, they spoke the language, ate the food, etc. but I'm not familiar with the culture of the actual country. According to my grandma, you base you nationality upon that of family. For me, I base my nationality on my emotional ties. I'm an American citizen but I consider myself culturally Croatian and American, yet biologically I'm Croatian, Slovakian, Irish, French, German, and who knows what else.
