STOP the Zimbabwe Arms Shipment!
April 21, 2008 - 03:04 PM
|
|
The Chinese ship, carrying 77 tonnes of arms and ammunition has been forced to leave the South African port of Durban after dockers refused to unload the shipment and a judge ruled that the weapons could not be transported across South Africa.
The ship is now trying to find another dock in order to unload its weapons and transport them to landlocked Zimbabwe. We only have a matter of days to stop this arms shipment. Please help us stop this shipment NOW!
Sign our petition to help stop the Zimbabwe arms shipment , and share this group with your friends and tell them to do this same.
http://www.iansa.org/stoptheshipment/
We will deliver the petition to the chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the governments of countries in the region with a port, including Angola, DR Congo, Mozambique, Namibia and Tanzania.
thanks!
Mark

At a time when China is facing world wide protests over Tibet they ship arms to Mugabe so he punish his own people for voting for the opposition -
its just deplorable. I was against leaders boycotting the Olympics before this - but think Europe and the US should say plainly that if China arms Mugabe in this situation they will ALL boycott the cerimonies.

It just boggles the mind... the Peking Olympics should be cancelled and moved to South Africa!
A big THANK YOU to the Durban dock workers!

And who will pay for all the costs? :-)
Anyway, I hope the Olympics will not be disrupted and take place in Peking.

Arslan - you seriously have nothing to say about the arms shipment -
who cares about the Olympics - it is a sporting event - Mugabe was going to use these weapons to brutalize political opposition.

I entirely agree. Arms shipment is wrong. But the Olympics is SPORTS event. It should not be linked to China's support for dictatorial regimes. I don't know how people can think that boycotting Olympics will hurt the Chinese government. It will make ordinary people hate the boycotters of the Olympics, not their own government.
Moreover, if we start boycotting powerful countries that arm dictatorial regimes, then I can't think of many countries that deserve organizing Olympics. Those hypocritical French speaking about boycotting actually support regimes worse than Mugabe's.
How would you personally feel, Luke, as a citizen of the US, if such an sports event in your country (after so much preparation) is boycotted because of pathetic policies of the Bush Administration?

now we are under arms embargo and you tell me Zimbabwe is not under sanctions.
im glad China has cleared the air and its unfortunate that some people chose not to listen.
See:http://www.herald.co.zw/inside.aspx?sectid=33554&cat=1
Its funny how any move the Gvt makes is against the opposition.
And about boycotting the Olympics that being hypocrites who sell more arms China or US? 30% of the arms traded in the World are from the US and DRC,Kenya Ethopia, Somalia they are bleeding because of the arms from the US. We dont need Hypocrites
Anyway whats so special about a sovereign nation buying arms to defend its own territorial integrity

Arslan - that is why I said I origonally disagreed with the boycott -
I particularly thought Bush would look rediculous boycotting someone else over their policies.
But it is just shameless that China would do something this blatently and morally wrong as arming Mugabe while he still refuses to even release the results of an election that happened over a month ago.
At the sametime they are trying to use the Olympics as this big PR push to make China look like a great country.
China is a great country - but obviously they also need to examine some policies - and while their torch is being protested all over the world because of Tibet - they go and do this - shameless.

Oh, yeah, Mugabe is worried about an invasion from Botswana and needs all those rifle bullets fast. It's more likely he needs those 3,000,000 bullets to eliminate 3,000,000 opposition voters before his bogus "election recount" makes a run-off necessary.
