[Poll] If we turned our cars into Hybrid and electric cars, would most people purchase these fuel-efficient cars?

Due to the fact that cars are polluting the earth, inventors have come up with various ways to reduce the amont of pollution that come from cars. They have came up with the Hybrid model of cars. The Hybrid cars have a very good mpg (miles per gallon) rate and are very fuel-efficient. The inventors have also come up with the electric cars. These cars run mostly on their electric batteries. These cars use very little fuel.
Do you think that people would rather purchase a Hybrid or electric vehicle, compared to a regular car?
A lot of people would purchase a Hybrid or electric car
(0 votes for 0%)
Most people would purchase a Hybrid or electric car
(1 votes for 12.5%)
Some people would purchase a Hybrid or electric car
(4 votes for 50%)
Hardly anyone would purchase a Hybrid or electric car
(3 votes for 37.5%)

The main factor that plays into buying a vehicle is cost. With that said, I know prices are much higher for hybrids or electric cars. Doing a quick check, the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid is $26,350 where as the sedan is $16,990 (base models). $10,000 is quite the difference, however it is understandable that you can argue that you will save money because you won't be spending as much on gas. But if you do mainly highway driving, then the payoff isn't that much, and will take a long time to add up to $10,000.
After you consider price, you also have to consider enjoy-ability. I know I'm not the only one who, when buying a car wants to know its performance capability. That said, Hybrids don't perform anywhere near as good as their gas counterparts. Don't get me wrong, they can, and some do -- but these are even more expensive and often then out weigh the benefits of getting the hybrid/electric in the first place.

At the risk of sounding like a school marm, I feel we should stop emphasizing a car's "performance" and instead focus on its environmental impact. SUV's or sportscars that go from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds are really unnecessary and we know they put out much more CO2 than smaller engine cars.
Hybrid cars have a lower negative environmental impact, but at a high money cost. In Japan, where I live, there is a special category of small cars which can be only a certain length and cannot have engines bigger than 660 cc's. These cars are not slow off the line and can cruise comfortably at the maximum speed limits imposed here in Japan. Their miles per gallon is in the 40 to 60 mpg range. The government taxes them at a lower rate than cars with bigger engines.
This approach would provide a lower environmental impact at a reasonable price to the consumer (depending on equipment, these small cars range from $6000 t0 $11,000). Of course, the SUV driver will claim that he is "safer" in an SUV and the laws of physics dictate that he is right. But in Japan over HALF of all cars sold are the 660cc variety. If everyone drove them, their safety would not be less than a SUV's.
We can continue to behave like adolescent boys and demand "souped up" cars or we can behave responsibly and reduce our impact on global warming. The choice is yours.

I like that point you made. It is very unnecessary to have a car that goes from 0 to 100 miles an hour within 4 seconds. Like you said, instead of having a sporty suped up roadster, we should be paying attention to our environmental issues.
