Poetry: Beauty or annoyance?

What do you feel poetry really is? Is it a form of art? A way of expressing your feeling? An insight into ones soul? Possibly even simply an annoying way of wording things?
Personally, I think that poetry is a beautiful form of art that people use to let their heart and soul flow through. I think that it, along with other artistic forms of expression, should be encouraged.
On the contrary though, I feel that poetry is something that people should be able to take their own idea and feelings from. I feel that a poem should reflect the poet, but should also reflect something from the reader. It should
incorporate their mind and soul so that they can feel the words as they read them and take something that relates to their life from it

Very well said !
In fact, I share your vision of poetry. I also created a project called Highly poetry !
It is a POEM that never ends about CULTURE, POETRY, DIVERSITY, CLIMATE CHANGES AND ALL THE ISSUES THAT YOUTH ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT. The main purposes are to promote culture exchanges and cultural diversity through art, to promote poetry as a tool to inspire, informe and engage youth (it is the spirit of TakingITGlobal, is't it ?), a tool for youth empowerment, an educative tool used in schools and universities to encourage creativity, art and poetry and also help the students enrich their writing skills by participating to this project and being recongnized as a young poet (I plan to publish it in a book dedicated to this project, maybe youth can be motivated to participate if they realize that we are recognizing their work and at the same time we are helping them improve their writing skills and thus, have higher marks !).

"One ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and... speak a few reasonable words." This is from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
What I've read in a business newsletter (ETR of Apr 24 2008) is this:
There's more to life than money. To be an interesting, well-rounded person, you have to spend time building the "personal you" as well as your bank account.
Improving your personal self should be one of your primary goals every year. And it can be as simple as reading a poem a day.
If a money-making author says to read - and enjoy it - reading a good poem, and gives tips for it, why not find beauty in a poem one may find annoying at first sight?
