THE MISTY OF AUTISM.
April 3, 2008 - 09:02 AM

Autism is a severe mental illness that affects childern and prevents them from communicating with other people. About 35 million childern in United State are living with the disorder. It affects black, white, male and famale.
Apirl 2nd was the international awareness day for childern living with Autistic disorder.
What is the way forward for this childern? how can you help to make them live a normal life? live as independent as possible.
For now there is no CURE for Autism.

There is a whole spectrum of severity in autism. Some people you have to know closely to even realize they have any difficulties. Many others have it in more debilitating ways, but a few develop savant abilities and have a niche in the world. Watch Rainman.

My dad has a mild form called Aspergers and fits both categories. He is always a bit distant and not so good on interpreting the emotions of others. He's also a programming genius and runs a small software company that sells military-grade espionage software.

I'm not sure the world would be a better place if autism was cured. Bill Gates probably has it. Isaac Newton probably had it. My dad would be a bit less difficult to be around but a bunch of government agencies and banks would be merely as secure as an ordinary human mind can make them.

As for how to help children with it, make sure they socialize and feel loved. Just because these people sometimes appear to be emotionless robots does not mean that is the case. They can feel but may not show it, or show it in strange ways.

Like many disabiltiies, Autism is also the one which is invisiblized and not understood.

Just a small correction - that Autism is not mental illness. It is a Pervasive developmental disorder. We can know more about Autism at http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/autism/detail_autism.htm

It will be interesting to know from others if they have come across people with Autism and what could be the helpful ways of responding to a person with Autism

Autism is a medical condition in childern that hampers them from crawling, walking and saying the first word on time, like other normal healthy childern. However, experts are speculating that this developmental problem may be due to enviromental factors like heavey rainfall. Researchers at cornell university said they found a like between the amount of rainfall in an area and the number of childern diagnosed with the condition, though they admitted the resson for the possible like after looking at the group of childern born in different parts of American ststes, California, Oregon, Washington between 1987 and 1999, they compared the annual rainfall that the childern would have been exposed to the first two years of their life and found a link between higher levels of annual precipitation and autism.
They did not actually suggest that rain causes autism instead, their theory was that, by keeping kids indoors too much will subject them to a million and possible environmental toxins from domestic chemicals as well as too much TV or computers games. One of these could be the cause of Autism. How ever, they stress that their further research is needed. It is true that if childern concentrate too much on TV, they may tend to have less interest in poeple around them, and as a result, this may affect their behavioural development in life and the fall development of their brain.

Interesting topic!

A friend my parents' when I grew up lived outside the city in country Australia. They had one normal / healthy child, and then one child a couple of years later who had autism. The children both grew up outside (they lived pretty much in a caravan!), so I definitely don't believe that growing up inside was the cause!

It took the parents a long time to realise there was a problem, but after they did the father spent almost his entire time, every day from dawn to dusk with his autistic son. The parents made sure they read all the books, went to all the conferences, and generally had the best available information to help their son. It amazes me but they actually succeded. Their son went from being unable to speak at all, and very difficult to deal with, to being an eloquent speaker, highly intelligent, energetic and motivated, and able to attend a normal school. cool

Pretty cool hey? But it's a rare parent who has the time and money to spend all day with their child for five or more years straight.

Actually I wonder how he's going now ... will have to see next time I go back (I'm living in China now running the (dajiudian.info China Hotel Booking Network).

This is a very interesting research paper by doctors on causes of autism and other neurological disorders plaguing children. It is long though, but worth the read.
