Schism among Arab countries

WASHINGTON, March 31 (UPI) -- As expected, there were no surprises at the Arab summit in Damascus that ended Sunday without any breakthrough regarding the Lebanese presidential crisis. If anything came out of the summit -- boycotted by 11 of the 22 members of the Arab League -- it is the obvious and deep divisions that remain between what is perceived as the pro-Washington countries and Syria. Supporting the Beirut government -- and the U.S. position -- are primarily Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, whose leaders did not attend the summit in Syria, preferring to be represented by lower-ranking ministers in protest against Syria's role in Lebanon.
Perhaps the one surprise, strange as it might appear, is that the voice of reason from the Damascus summit was none other than that of Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gadhafi, who warned his fellow leaders that they risk being deposed much like former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Clean frontière has been delineated between two groups of Arab and Muslim countries...
Now what?

Hayk - you can't get around the idea that Egypt and the Saudi's are basically right - Syria is obstructing the election of a new president in Lebanon.
They want the general to agree in advance not to support the international tribunal looking into the Hariri assassination - they also expect agreement in advance on a range of other issues - essentially they will only agree to a President who is a lame duck.
The General has integrity and will accept the presidency on those terms.
At some level - eveyone is trying to say these countries are doing America's bidding - but I think in this instance they are genuinely upset with Syria.
HALF the countries boycotted... that is a big number
Also - Lebanon brings into focus another issue bugging many Arab leaders - the growing power of Iran. Iran and Syria are partners in supporting Hezbullah in Lebanon - the Arabs don't WANT Hezbullah (ie Iran) controlling Lebanon.

Those "summits" will achieve nothing other than wasting more time and money. The political decisions are not in the hands of the Arab leaders. They can not agree on anything because uncle Sam is not far away from them, and is watching them.
And even if we agree that Gaddafi was telling the truth, we should not forget he is a brutal dictator like the ones he is criticizing. Libyans are among the poorest in the world despite their country is one of the richest in natural resources.
