Cameroon and its greater ambitions
March 22, 2008 - 09:07 AM

After the great strike which almost led to a civil war in the Republic of Cameroon, a country which could be termed a country with a stable peace, the President of the Republic decided to take some measures to calm down the burning patience of his citizens who have been waiting for a change for over 25 years today.
In the PMs address to the nation he stated that the president of the republic has decided as thus;
To increase the salaries of civil servant by 15%,
To reduce the price of basic food stuff like floor, fish, sugar, rice which saw a tremedous increase in price during this recent period,
Again the president of the Republic promised employment opportunities for over 10000 unemployed cameroonian youths.
Also the price of fuel which actually was the immidiate cause of the strike also saw a reduction of about 20frs CFA.
The PM termed this as part of the greater ambitions of the President of the Republic.
In all said and not done most cameroonians looked at this information and termed it another story telling of the President, others looked at it as a means for the President to have his way in changing the constitution of the Republic which has been the talk of the country at the moment while others say it would not take place.
In all these what most Cameroonians are asking is whether the President had to wait for a demonstration which took away lives of innocent individuals to take action. Again the population have always heard of promises made by the government which have never been materialised would this one this time around prove the population of Cameroon wrong in their jugements.
Finanly all these have to take ineffect as from April 2008 would this be respected after the problem on the change of the constitution must have been resolved by the end of March 2008?
With all these most Cameroonians still remain optimistic about the greater ambitions of the President of the Republic of Cameroon his Excellence President Paul Biya

i'm not sure whether this fits in entirely, but i watched tv program about a week ago about the sale of bushmeat in cameroon, and how even though it's illegal, youths and even locals have to sell this bushmeat (actually including endangered species such as chimps & gorillas) just to get by. One scene showed a group becoming aggressive to the journalist and his cameramen because if the police saw then they'd be arrested. Another scene showed the police on a regular train from the suburbs to the city checking bags and bodies for bushmeat, and they even go so far as accusing apparently innocent women with kids. It is likely that the women did have bushmeat in this 'stranded' bag next to her, but with kids should it be seen that she was feeding them or is she just another youth on the street becoming violent because a camera is on them. It shows the divide between the country just like here - everything's more expensive and more excessive in the city than in the suburbs, and perhaps the PM needs to sort out the distinction between what is acceptable in both areas so that violence doesn't occur as regularly.
