Best Univeristy Programs?
June 24, 2003 - 01:00 AM

Does anyone know of sites or information resources that showcase or list the best University Programs around the world?

What about a community where I can gain an understanding of how to go about building my course components?

Say I want to study Philosophy, Metaphysics, Psychology and International Development Law... (is that a course?) all at once...

Where can I go to be told "No you cannot do that, but this is what you can do, this is what you need and here is how you must go about it." ?

Thankyou smile

oh Leana thaz right! US schools really like students who have special talents like sports, leaderships skills or arts. You can show off your art talents to make ur application stand out. And then again check out www.bates.edu,www.swarthmore.edu, and berkerly(ask Mike Newton hes gonna school there). My friend did not do very exellent in highschool in term of grades ( btw US Sat sucks!) but she got to swarthmore cuz she wrote an exellent essay and send her music and art stuff.

wow TIG is a great place!

Jacob, do you know any link that give instructions, tips on how to write a good essay at university level. Writing a highschool essay is a lot different from writing a college essay isnt it? And also links providing tips and instructions on improving skills like critical reading and writing, time management for university life,.. That would very very helpful for me.

And then i would give you anoth big thank if you and anyone would introduce me some cant-be-missed canadian writers, and american and canadian short stories writers.

Two Other Possibilities
June 24, 2003 - 01:17 AM

Jarra, There are two very flexible colleges with great reputations that I think you might like. One is Hampshire College in MA; the other one is Marlboro College in VT. There are both small liberal arts colleges with very flexible distribution requirements.

Hampshire College is with the 5 college consortium, along with Amherst, U of MA, Smith, and Mt. Holyoke. It was actually created by the other 4 to offer a more individualized curriculum. You basically design your own major and if they don't offer a course, they will allow you to create one. They offer open registration on all campus' and all social activities are jointly organized amongst the 5 colleges, which gives you a social sphere of about 30,000 students. It is located a couple of hours outside of Boston.

Marlboro offers a tremendous amount of independent study, and you can design your own major and curriculum. Research and writing play a heavy role, but you have a tremendous amount of intellectual freedom. It is small, so you receive a lot of personal attention.

Neither school relies on testing for placement, instead they place heavy emphasis on the essay and interview. Being an international student will certainly benefit your application as well.

www.hampshire.edu
www.marlboro.edu

Hope that helps. Best of luck on your search smile

Lanh, I know a lot of schools over here have special classes and advisors to help foreign students settle in and work on their writing. They wouldn't let you come all this way and then not help you a little!

for the first question, ill post later the links i used when doing my college search. But it depends on what country and subject u wanna study .. i donno about phylosophy (maybe Yale?) but for Inter Dev Law then check out LSE in Uk,Bates Us etc, Uni of Amsterdam netherland, etc.

as for the course components, once u accepted to an university, most uni will have registration week in which they will help you create ur own curriculum. Loz of liberal arts school allow you to have individualized programme which means you can choose what you wanna learn.

but often u can taste whatever in ur first year, and then in ur second year u choose what u wanna major.so u can switch, change mind etc.

last, the community, why not build one here? smile

im going to uni in a couple of months

having loz of questions too. wink

and choosing courses is a headache!! cuz everything looks to tempting.

Mt. Holyoke

Regarding Mt. Holyoke, it is a women's college, but they allow cross registration for men from the other colleges. It becomes a great alternative for many of the guys enrolled elsewhere; as well as for the Holyoke women to enroll in some co-ed classes. Also with the five college consortium, you get an incredible selection of classes.

Actually, consortiums are fairly common among small liberal arts colleges. The Claremont colleges in California are a group of five schools- one a women's college, one a research-geared university, one a liberal arts college, one graduate school, and something else that allow cross registration. St. Olaf's and Carleton in Minnesota do the same thing.

Lanh - you might want to check out Margaret Atwood, or Michael Ignatieff. I think I might have misspelled their names. Both are Canadian writters and have won international acclaim. I have to admit I haven't read any more than excerpts from either them, but I sure hear good things about their writing by reputation. What do you intend to study at University. Essay writting in univesity really varies depending on the discipline and course you're taking. A history essay is structed and dissected differently than an English essay, than a political science essay...
I don't know of any links I can give you. Sorry.

Jarra - I hope you find the school that suits you best.

Great posting guys!

Jarra, although age may seem like an issue to you, don't let it hinder you. Since you're quite the active TIG member, use it to your advantage to market yourself. Universities, Canadian ones are definitely in the less pricier range although I'm not sure what it's like for int'l students. US ones are pricier, and there is a larger range in quality. However, the good ones are really good and from my minimal research, it seems that the US universities fully support multi-disciplinary programs and are more flexible than the Canadian counterparts. (please correct me if I'm wrong).

A great link to int'l affairs universities across the world:

Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs
"APSIA.org provides information about our 29 member schools for current and prospective students, employers, media, and news-related professionals."

Check out Carleton University in Canada! Go Ravens Go!

Chris, remember me from the EWB conference?! smile

Ciao!
Luanne

Lanh - too broad to list!
Thinking over it again, the people at your university, who will be eager to help you, are probably better suited to help you the way you might need than I.

Jarra - last post (about this). I'm hesitant to toot my own horn, if you can call it that or that's what I'm even doing, but www.mta.ca . That's where I decided to go. For three years prior to university I had always researched schools, and prior to that even thought about myself and my future, and I had always been convinced and set on University of Toronto. At the very LAST minute I by chance happend to read the prospectus to Mount Allison, and in it the philosophy and mission statement, and was 'sold'(incorrect word, but there isn't a better one). I visited the school and later applied only to it. I just finised first year so if you were considering it in any I'd be willing to tell you about it. I don't want to shove anything down your throat though.

I don't know what you want, in an education or ultimately, but it all depends on what you're looking for. If you're clear on your values - what you value in a univesity education and what you desire and expect - finding the right school is much easier.

There have been some very posts on this topic, but let me add that if you had any inclination to attend a university in Canada I can maybe help you out with information etc. All of my friends went here.

Apart from that I wish you luck in making things work out for yourself.

Jacob

An idea
June 24, 2003 - 05:10 AM

University of Mlebourne
Combined Degree Arts/Law, 5 years full time
Can take majors in Philosophy & Psychology in Arts, and specialise in IDL within law.
Metaphysics at Melbourne is a specialisation within the Philosophy major.
Entrance requirement is an ENTER of 99.35, or less if you're cashed up.

But generally, Universities can tell you this sort of thing. Have a look at the websites of the main unis around the world, most of them have courses online, as well as subjects and major listings.

For example, Melbourne University Undergraduate Handbook; http://www.unimelb.edu.au/HB/

It's definitely possible ... I havea friend who's just completed an Arts/Law degree with majors in Politics & German, and a law specialisation in International Development.

Cheers
Simon
