Hi there,

Are there any plans to increase the speed of the site, particularly with regards to the Projects? They are very useful tools to have and a great way to manage people, resources and tasks - but navigating between each tool of the Project takes a bit of time.

I'm on broadband or some sort of fast corporate network at the moment, so that shouldn't be the problem. I mean, I think the tool is still great, regardless... but are there plans to make it so that going from say, Wiki to Blog to Members doesn't always require fresh page loads?

Cheers.

=)

Thanks TIG, as always.

Hi Cherrie,

I know this is an on-going problem!

There are a lot of problems when delivering online dynamic content across the globe. First, every page basically needs to be re-created every time one views a page, since most pages pull dynamic content when the page is loaded. So, beyond either making pages as fast as possible (which we worked on optimizing a year or so ago..), using new web technologies are the primary next step. HOWEVER ( sad ) the problem comes with the majority of our users using older browsers that don't render cool tricks properly, leading to unhappy pages.

The second challenge, is that our users are from around the world, and our servers are in Canada. So, as fast as the internet is, it still takes time for data to traverse it's way around the world. A solution to this is having servers on, at the very least, every continent or geographic area.

Of course, that costs a lot of money since we would then be using a ton of different web hosts. We would love web hosting partners, but those tend to be hard to acquire!

So, a little lengthy, I know, but that is pretty much why the site might be slow for you, and why there are only so many things we can actually do to solve the problem.

I hope that at least provides some insight!

... wouldn't it be cool if we could somehow work out some sort of "collaboration" between NZ/TIG so you could have servers here?...

hmmm...

We do want to find someone to donate a few servers to mirror the TIG site in the Pacific to speed things up for Asia/Oceania... We've also made some improvements throughout the last week to speed things up as per Yahoo! tips "Rules for High Performance Web Sites"

http://developer.yahoo.com/performance/

We have also slowly been implementing AJAX in all new stuff like in Understanding + My TIG - good idea though in Projects - we'll definately think about whether that would be possible!
