[Poll] Microsoft: How long willl it Last?
June 22, 2003 - 07:19 AM

Hey all,

I'm just interested to see what you all think of Microsoft. I'm sure that the majority of you are running Microsoft Windows platforms (Sorry Mac users smile), and i'm wondering how long do you think that Microsoft will hold the Monopoly on the world.
10, 20, 30 or more years?

Peace
Besty

An uprising in the midst
June 22, 2003 - 08:33 AM

Mac users of the world unite!

Let us overthrow the evil bourgeios Microsoft hegemony for a fairer, UNIX and Mac based computing economy.

I vote for less than 5 years, less out of expectation than hope. Who's with me?

Mossy

More Than That

I heard the bare bones of Windows were cheated from Unix.

Microsoft can find new ways of stealing ideas within the coming years. Don’t worry It will live for longer period than 10, 20, 30 years.

I believe Windows would continue to dominate the Home PC market in India, and most parts of the world for some time to come... may be well beyond 10 years. But at the enterprise level... for all large networks of the Government as well as the Industry... its all for Linux and other Open Source Code based softwares.

And... yeah MAC and UNIX has no scope in India... they are way too expensive to use.

Vivek (or anyone else in India),

How expensive are Macs in India? In comparison to the average per capita income of the middle classes? to the average Indian?

I know that India has a booming software engineering and IT sector, is it based on open source code and Linux?

Interesting post from Anh on open source code in Germany; <url>http://www.takingitglobal.org/discuss/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2907</url>

In India very few people actually use branded computers. A large majority of the PCs sold are actually assembled pieces. All components are easily available in all local markets. People contact their dealers, and decide upon the specific components, according to their budget and need. The dealer the assembles the PC and delivers it within a day.

A MAC could cost a minimum Rs.90,000 and an assembled PC with similar features and processing power can be bought for just Rs30,000. You also have an advantage of a better after sales service, and even upgrading your PC is much simpler with an assembled PC.

Moreover... MAC softwares are not easily available in India.
