well, ive just been reading through a few of everyones entries, and wow, its amazing to meet so many others especially from around the globe who have such passion for such a great cause. Im with most people on this one, zoos being good and bad, good in the sense they provide education and awareness for tomorrows children, our future leaders who can and hopefully will change them, and make a difference for the better. But then again, seeing these animals in confined spaces does pain me, because you know that they are better in the wild. But then you have to think, how much better, with limited habitats and territory due to de-forestation, and expanding civilization and just pure greed, and not to mention poaching, how long are they meant to survive and what quality of life are they living, or lack thereof, if not in a protected enviroment. In a perfect world, all animals and there respective environments would be protected wildlife parks, where we could all watch and learn about them in their natural surroundings, but unfortunately greedy governments, money and a growing population hinder this. Im from perth western australia, and the zoo we have has a very successful breeding program with many endangered animals, such as sun bears, orangutans, elephants, tigers, and most recently a cheetah. These animals are in beautiful enclosures, no, they arent the largest, but they are definitely created to mimick their natural surroundings, eg the new orangutan exhibit, which they have been raising money for for the past 5 years and its just completed, tall trees for them to swing through and towers etc. Im about to travel around the world, and ive never been to another zoo in my life, so im yet to see what they are like, but surely they are better then taronga and dubbo and perth zoo, we are such a small country with limited funds?! http://www.perthzoo.wa.gov.au/pr_orang_valentine.html

i think that zoos are a stupid idea & i dont know why they were founded in the first place ... its unfair to trap animals in those cages just because we want to watch them or to take kids in a school trip in order to see them ... it makes me mad when i see these animals surrounded by pepole observing them ... and you know what almost all of the people doesnt really learn any thing about these animals they just watch them and take pics of there kids & make stupid jokes about the animals ... they sometimes even hurt them .. if the really want to see animals and learn about them the should go on a safari trip or something.. cuze we dont have the right to keep these poor animals in presion (( i know i wont like it to be 24/7 observed by pepole ))

Good zoos vs. Bad zoos

From reading through this topic I have come to the conclusion that there are zoos where animals are well-catered for and zoos which are absolute **** (insert preferred negative term here), and ultimately some of the second type of zoos shouldn't exist because they are totally cruel.

I hate the idea of using an animal solely for exhibition and entertainment-it doesn't sit right with me, especially when the sort of stuff I have seen in zoos (rubbish thrown in, harrassing the animals, and ppl just not learning anything and going along to mock the animals and have a laugh) happens but I can see from a conservation perspective where others are justifying zoos from.

I am doing an ethics paper this year, and I read Singer's article calling for the incorporation of animals into our moral community. Basically, he says that because animals can suffer we should make them part of our moral community and consider them when making decisions based on an immoral/moral basis because we should strive for the greatest good for the world (utilitarian model). So in the zoo topic, I think that ideally if we had to have zoos they should be the best possible from the knowledge we have.

ezzatw: Aussie is pretty well off...and this may be a generalisation but I'd say the zoos that exist in third world countries or countries with limited funding ain't so pretty.

On another post I said something about the invasion of privacy and self-consciousness that could happen in a zoo...perhaps these are human things but being watched by others and kept in a cage for their entertainment wouldn't be my cup of tea.

Zoos: are they good or bad

Well, I hear you when you say that sometimes animals feel imprisoned while at the zoos.
I have a cat whose name is Lucky. I love her very much. Well, Lucky and I sleep in the same room at night. Sometimes she wants to out but I don't let her. I always think its dangerous. Well, as I was moving things in my room one day, the window cracked. That night, Lucky pushed the window, the place that had cracked, till it fell out. She was free to go and come as she liked!
My point is, sometimes we feel that we are protecting something by restraining its movements. Sometimes, its true. Sometimes its not.
With pouchers there, its a bit dificult to let animals run wild. What I would suggest though is that more game Reserves be built. This way, animals would be free to run in the wild, with protection.
I love animals. They are in plenty here in Kenya. You all should come and see, it is just beautiful!

Allow me to make this few comments to this topic.Zoos are a form of captivity to the aminals.Let animals be in their free and home habitant. take for example capturing an african elephant and taking it to a zoo in lets say Moscow. This living being will be deverstated both emotionally and physically.
there are alot of ways for children to get educated on wildlife and enviromental issues.ytake them for a game drive in the animals natural habitant. We also have orphanges for the destitute animals wherther sick or injured or orphaned.someone was saying that we should capture all elephants and put them into zoos to protect them from pochers.or for the young ones that have been let motherless to be taken into zoos.this is not right and moral not go.
Let me give you an example of a place in kenya where this young ones who have been orphaned are been taken care of very well.its called The DAvid Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. You can visit their website :www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org.
so anyone advocating for zoos should think again and definately visit this site.
Have a lovely day.
