Re: Zoos: Are They Good or Bad?

I guess I kind of see zoos as a blessing for some and a curse for others. For those animals taken in injured who were deemed unable to return to the wild it would be to their advantage as well as for those animals who were born into captivity. They know nothing but the spaces they were born into and know. That may be a blessing or a curse, but if the animal's health is at risk by placing them in the wild it wouldn't be worth trying. Not to mention the fact that zoos teach young people about animals, why they're here, what roles they play in the world, and just how much they need to be protected. A glimpse of an animal at play or sleeping can make a child think many things, I know it made me want to see them in the future and make them safe.
On the other hand, those animals which were brought into captivity and kept confined from their natural habitats do not receive the full benefit of being kept in a zoo. A wolf that can't travel and hunt with it's pack.. an eagle unable to soar the skies, that is inhumane. They deserve better treatment than that of a pet, wild creatures are just that... wild, it's our responsibility to help keep it that way, unless harm or injury results in us, "taking them under our wing," so to speak.

zoos are bad no question about it. they take anamils from there natural habbitats and put them in cages for humans to point and stare at. the ones that are born in captivity have comprimised habbits from what they would be if they had been born in there natural habbitat. people have no right to treat any living being in such an inhumane way. those who say that it is good for certin animals because it stops them from becomeing extinct are deranged. first off we are the ones who cause the dire depleation of the majority of the animals that are indangered and secondly we should not lock them up in a cage as we do in our socity to those who do something contrary to the laws of the place they reside for these animals have done nothing except live there life in the only way that they know so that they can survive so as to produce offspring to greaten there population. i feal that since we have endangered so many spices that we should attempt to undo the insane damage that we have caused and nurture the animals in there on environment. humans have a decent history of doing this by helping animals prosper in animal reservations where they are kept from the danger that we ourselves cause but not from life as they would normaly know it. i am sorry for my rage and any offense that i have caused but this issue really hit a cored for me.

Working Together
August 27, 2003 - 03:54 AM
|
|
Ami, first may I say, welcome to TIG. I can see that you are very passionate about this subject, and you can use that passion to help create alternative solutions.
This post, along with most of the forums are meant to be an exchange of ideas. We try not to go on the attack, although we occasionally (sometimes more than occasionally) fall short of that goal.
I would like hearing about your ideas on how we can 'undo' the damage, and see what kind of conversation that generates. Never has the ability to work with so many people from around the world been so easy. Together we can find an answer.
This is a global issue, and seeking ideas from different cultures may generate a whole new plan. If we can come up with something that meets most objectives, than we can begin to implement change. Protection of wildlife and our environment is of primary importance.

WWF letter re: Gorillas
August 27, 2003 - 06:08 AM
|
|
I just received this email and thought you might be interested. Very, very sad. -Michael Cartier
Dear Friend of WWF,
You know World Wildlife Fund as the premier conservation organization dedicated to protecting the world's wildlife and wild lands. And as a supporter of WWF you know you are right alongside us in the field. Today, we want to tell you know about a crisis affecting one of the most loved animals on earth - the gorilla.
Thousands of lowland gorillas are being slaughtered!
Once hunted only by local people to feed their own families, gorillas are now being gunned down with automatic weapons.
The trend is alarming: gorillas -- on the brink of extinction -- are murdered simply to be served smoked, or as a steak or stew in "gourmet" restaurants in cities as far away as Paris or Brussels!
Habitat loss, poaching for a growing commercial bushmeat trade, and most recently an outbreak of ebola that is affecting human and ape populations alike, threaten to decimate Africa's population of lowland gorillas and other great apes.
WWF has launched an emergency response to this crisis.
We have created a plan to safeguard gorillas -- stepped up anti-poaching enforcement; increased support for protected areas; and innovative efforts with multinational logging companies to stem their harmful activities...
Sincerely,
Kathryn S. Fuller
President
World Wildlife Fund

thank you for your interest! i think that we should stop capturing animals in the wild and putting them in zoos. instead we should take the animals we find injered or in a stiuation that could comprimise the exsistance of the spiecis to an animal reservation will they will still be in there natural habitat but away from the thing that threatens them. in referance to the zoo situation i understand that zoos are very popular and it would make alot of people angry if they all just closed down so i feal that we should not bring any more animals from there natural habbitat but alow them to contine breading in the zoos. despite the fact that i am strongly against zoos i do understand that they are very popular with the massess and this is one time where i must comprimise my objections to try to come to terms with a relistic goal.

Are zoos good or bad?
September 17, 2003 - 12:17 PM
|
|
I really don't know if zoos are good or bad. I just think that bringing a species of animal from the wild to make sure that they don't become extinct and continue to exist in the future is awesome. Do I think that forcing animals to live in a confined cage, no matter how large, without the thrill of the hunt and the responsibility of having a family and caring for yourself is wrong.
I believe that there should be a program created in which zookeepers and scientists can care for an animal and still be able to find it's herd/family (depending on the animal) and continue its life as if nothing had ever happened.

I see nothing wrong with zoos but i'm against animals in circuses, that is just wrong. we need to zoos to understand why animals is important. every thing has it good and bad but we need to weigh the good with the bad and the good outweighs

Zoo's Bad as ABuffalo
September 22, 2003 - 09:14 AM
|
|
I think zoo's are bad, I don't believe that shpeal about it's important to connect people to the animals, and too see the importance of endangered species. Although I do have some indispensable memories that took place at zoo's. But as far as being a positive to the animals no I don't believe that is true. If I were an otter I wouldn't want to live in a dirt tank that’s about 1/10000000, or my real habitat, life would be tuff and ugly, like raw buffalo. But zoo's are all about the cash money like some sort of silly rap act. We don't like silly rap "artist" do we? Nope the same goes with seeing flamingo's locked in a little hole about the size of my school's eating space it's disguesting.

I say no to zoo's
Because like you said they are prisoners of human control.
people I guess like to take control of animals in cruel ways
like beating and abusing them they don't realize that they
are hurting them either that or they dont care about animals FEELINGS.Zoo's are evil evil places that take animals from there homes and place them in closed in places that arent meant for them.

Going to the Zoo should be a terrible experience.
Should there be a giant poster of a wild slaughtered gorilla next to the Zoo's gorilla exhibit?
I think so,
but where is the fun in that?
Visitors should be leaving in tears.
Are zoo's truly educating?

Zoos good, or at least not all bad
January 8, 2004 - 01:52 AM
|
|
Modern progressive zookeeping does not revolve around imprissonment. Many of the conservation developments on animal breeding have been performed within zoological gardens. Australia has an excellent record in this respect as does England (particulary Chester zoo and Londoin zoological gardens); Mexico and Washingtom. Animal species such as the black footed ferret (not quite as sexy as pandas but equally deserving of saving) would be extinct without the intervention and captive breeding programs sponsored by zoo's.
Most of these zoos include psycological treatments of their animals. There was an excellent set of studies several years ago on imitating hunting actions of captive wild cats (Chester zoo, UK). Also as our understanding of animal habitats increases modern zoo's are making the attempt to update facilities.
There are bad zoos, usually equated with badly funded.

i work in the zoo in the summer and i am going to school to study to be a zoologist or vertrnarian. There is nothin wrong with zoos. The animals in those cages are like big babys. The people who work there hence: myself, become to love and care for these animals. And the animals know that we are not there to hurt them but to protect and care for them. And they grow closer to you also.Zoos are not bad they are a place to go to see animals from around the world that most people don't get to see. And to become intouched with your inner child.
