Re: Zoos: Are They Good or Bad?
July 2, 2003 - 01:36 AM

Love the discussion I've always thought the main purpose of zoos is to educate the masses (esp children, since they are the inheritors of nature) about biodiversity but aren't they borned out of a thirst for entertainment? I mean, the Romans did it 2 millenia ago just for the emperor's fancy, and that practice has continued till now.
Zoos may educate children that we are not the only inhabitants of this globe but they may very well give them the impression that those very animals they marvel at are beneath us and that we caging them is normal practice. I think it is more important for them to see the animals in their own habitats and understand the crucial roles they (wildlife) play.
Hopefully with current technological advances we may be able to both study and teach wildlife using bits and bytes via virtual interaction. Though this may never substitute the real thing, it reduces the number of animals caged and paraded.
And yes i do agree that the quality of life of an animal in a zoo may well exceed their brethens out in the wild. Perhaps may seem good for individuals but i believe they will thrive even more as a community in the wild, if they are given the chance and space. I wouldn't think anyone of us would like the prospect of being caged with nothing to do even though we're well taken care of.
Also, wildlife in zoos are very vulnerable to human conflicts as they rely on us for substinence. Often they are left on their own devices when the city they're in goes under attack and starve to death.
My 2 cents

i suppose i am mostly in favor of zoos... as long as they are well-funded and take very (VERY) good care of the animals. i think they are wonderful for educating children (and adults, for that matter) about the importance of protecting biodiversity and endangered species, etc. as a child i never thought that animals were beneath me just because they were in cages, or that caging them was a natural practice... in fact, the zoo always helped me appreciate the animals more - actually seeing them makes the problems a lot more real for people. so overall, zoos help more than they harm, in my opinion.

Not sure...

That is something I have been considering myself. I live in Milwaukee, home to one of the country's best zoo's, so I guess I have kind of a tainted perspective. I think that maybe if all zoos had to meet some sort of requirements in order to house animals, that would help with their situation. But I think it is important to have zoos for education and research. Koko, the signing gorilla, started out as a zoo research project, and she proved to be excellent for the humane portrayal of gorillas(versus the king kong image). Not to mention the enormous breakthrough of her language skills. How can we expect people to care if they don't know anything?? Yes, they don't actually have to see the animals to learn about them, but lets face it, we humans are way more likely to pay attention and give a damn if we have a "poster child" to look at. However, zoos need to be really careful about the breeding situation, because I remember hearing somewhere that due to all the interbreeding zoos do, they produce lots of albino animals. Are we really helping if the animal populations we increase have mutated genes? I think natural habitats would definitely be preferable for all wildlife, but is that really possible for all species?

Our zoo
July 12, 2003 - 09:18 AM
|
|
Zoos of course have their benefit for people especially little children who live in countries with no large green areas which can be used as open parks. It's their only chnace to see all these kinds of animals.
I'm Egyptian and we have such a case in our country..it's a pity..
Our zoo is however a disaster..
The best u can see is an elephant, lions, some birds and few species of goats and monkeys
You get no enough information because the keepers are no experts just some old men with a very poor salary.
The animals don't get the care&attention they deserve..you can always find children feeding the animals any stuff they just find..
The government try to renew it but all it does is rebuilding it but with no chnge for the poor animals who that are not only kept in cages but actually suffer alot due to lack of care and know-how..
Do u get the picture? I hope so..

I kind of agree with many of the opinions in this forums. I think zoos are great because they do offer a lot of educational information for the younger folk. I went to a zoo the other day in Peterborough, and they had amazing information boards next to each man-made habitat. Also, this particular zoo had a Turtle Trauma Centre, which I thought was a great idea.
Although, after a conversation with a close friend a while ago, I am not on board with places that use animals for the sole purpose of entertainment (i.e. Marineland). There was some information on the animals, but the main focus was on watching animals do backflips for lunch. That's where I have the problem, when animals simply become commodities and attractions we poke and prod at will.

well actually its not a definite answer it all DEPENDS on the condition of the Z00, If the Z00 is clean and if the animals are well treated then its G00D BUT if its the opposite then its bad ,so i guess the answer is it DEPENDS!!

Zoo Organization
July 14, 2003 - 11:37 AM
|
|
Is there an international zoo coalition? If not, one should be created, primarily for the purpose of insuring that all zoos, nature preserves, and wildlife parks are properly funded and the animals are well taken care of and protected. Well funded zoos, and other organizations, through the coalition, would send financial aid, as well as advisors, to help the zoos in poorer areas to meet certain standards. Once all zoos have reached those standards of animal care, and the staff are properly trained, the coalition would work to help the zoo become self-sufficient. Joint funding opportunities could be arranged and the coalition could become a place where arrangements could be made for animal visits from one zoo to another. They could share experiences and materials amongst one another. Research could be conducted jointly as well. What do you think?

Volunteer Corp
July 15, 2003 - 06:57 AM
|
|
Good point, Noonie! So often, we complain about a situation, but do little to help correct it. Your suggestion about volunteers jumping in to help take care of conditions in a zoo is great. Of course, there still needs to be staff training and education, and there also needs to be enough funding available for the zoo to properly feed and maintain habitats; but some of the more basic needs could be filled by volunteers. Perhaps schools could offer programs to their students, which would allow them to receive credit for working at the zoo; while the zoos could offer those students unique privileges, like special access to the facilities, or research opportunities. Community organizations could ‘adopt’ a particular animal or habitat, where they raise money or send in volunteers to work on a specific area. Different parts of the zoo could be ‘adopted’ by business groups, which would serve as a wonderful public relations campaign for their product or services.
Lots can be done in this world by people willing to volunteer and put themselves on the line for the betterment of others. Many zoos could use our help.

I love to go to the zoo , you can know there information about ( HOW THE NATURE LOOKS LIKE )
it is very helpfull , especially for the kids , they can gain good experience about animals , how they looks like , not only to have the experience of animals from cartoon movies
but the bad point is that the animals have no place to fell free , so i like the opened zoo more

i really think that open parks are more beter as they are more educational , cause they show u the biodiversty and the actual way that the animals act, and there maners plus they will act really normally .

i forgot to remark something which is that some animals needs to get environmet similar to that they used to live in as a polar bear as an exaple is really hard to live in the Egypt but it needs special care and which will cost as i think lots of money to make it's environment found in an open part for example here in Egypt.

The natural place for animals is jangels and forests. If we put animals in a cage and watch them, this is unfair. When we where children we watched animals at zoos so many times, this was so interesting. But, it is unfair to watch animal and enjoy, while they don't enjoy their free life. When we say that the habitat in zoos may be comfortable for aanimals, this is an allusion. if children want to know about animals, scientists can do this. But animals shouldn't be prisoned.
